Check tutorial of Send a Notification Badge to the Terminal Dock Icon When a Task is Finished
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Send a Notification Badge to the Terminal Dock Icon When a Task is Finished.
Not long ago we showed it to you how to announce when a command line task has completed by using the ‘say’ command, but since it speaks aloud it may be inappropriate to use it in a silent environment. A much more subtle notification takes advantage of Terminal apps’ new use of the BEL warning, which in OS X Lion pushes a red notification badge to the Dock icon instead of sounding the awful hardware beep.
Adding a notification alert to a completed assignment is easy, just add “&& tput bell” at the end of an assignment. For example, if you want to generate the notification alert when the make command is completed, it would look like this:
make install && tput bell
When you are done running, the default system warning will sound, the Terminal dock icon will bounce and a new red notification badge will be added.
If you want to see it in action in OS X, try ping and then move away from the Terminal app:
ping -c 5 www.google.com && tput call
This can be much better than the “say” alert as it remains useful even when the computer is muted, and it is more versatile than the Growl notification method as it does not require additional software to be installed to function. It works in OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion.
