Clicking an email link in a web browser starts Mail.app by default, which is great if you’re using Mail, but not so good if you’re using webmail services like Gmail. This is quite easy to fix, although you will have to configure it separately per browser, with different methods for Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera.

Set Gmail as the default email client in Chrome and Opera

  • Open a new browser window and open up Gmail
  • Open the Javascript console by pressing Command + Option + J and paste the following: navigator.registerProtocolHandler (“mailto”, “https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s”, “Gmail”);
  • Accept the confirmation at the top of the browser window and try out a mailto link

This can be reversed or changed again by going to chrome: // settings / handlers and tweaking the setting as desired.

Use Gmail as the default email address in Firefox

  • Open Firefox Preferences
  • Click on the “Applications” tab
  • Find ‘mailto’ in the ‘Content Type’ tab and change the action to ‘Use Gmail’
  • Close Firefox preferences

Switching back to the default behavior is simply a matter of reselecting Mail as the action.

Using Gmail as the default email in Safari

Safari users can either use a browser extension called GmailThis, available in Apple’s extension gallery, or use apps like Gmail Notifier that we discussed earlier here for the menu bar warnings. After Google Notifier is installed:

  • Open email preferences and click “General”
  • Pull down the ‘Default Email Reader’ and find ‘Google Notifier’
  • Close Mail.app

Older versions of Mac OS X can also use WebMailer, but Google Notifier is the most reliable.
