Lavabit is a secure and encrypted email platform that has been getting a lot of attention lately in light of recent news events. Lavabit aims to prevent privacy degradation, so Lavabit doesn’t just have excellent anti-spam and anti-virus options features along with your standard email niceties like autoresponders, is most relevant feature right now it is using SSL and asymmetric encryption for incredibly secure email communications. Here is the brief description of Lavabits security features, but for those really interested, you can read more here:

How does asymmetric encryption protect your privacy? The short description is that for users feature, incoming email messages are encrypted before they are stored on our servers. Once a message is encrypted, only someone who has the account password can decrypt the message. Like all security measures, encryption is only effective when used. To ensure privacy, Lavabit has developed a complex system that makes the entire encryption and decryption process transparent to the end user. This process works by combining three different encryption schemes with Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC) as the cornerstone.

If that sounds good to you, or if you’re just interested in a new email address with more personal and secure email communications, we’ll go through the setup up Lavabit in the standard iOS Mail client.

This guide will focus on adding a new secure / encrypted Lavabit email account that can be used in conjunction with the email already set up for use on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, meaning it will work alongside any Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, whatever account you have configured. This guide works the same on all devices, both in iOS 6 and iOS 7.

Configure Lavabit Secure Email with iOS Mail

Note that you can use POP or IMAP, we’ll focus on IMAP so that previous emails remain accessible with another device and / or the lavabit webmail client. The configuration for POP3 is the same, except for the port number, which uses 995 instead of 993.

  • Draw first up for Lavabit, the two free mail accounts work fine for this purpose or you can opt for the paid plans – make a note of your username and set a strong password, but don’t forget this password as there is no reset or recovery option for enhanced security purposes
  • Open “Settings” in iOS and go to “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and choose “Add Account …”
  • Tap “Other” and on the “New Account” screen enter your name, email address (username@lavabit.com), password and “Lavabit” as the description, then tap “Next”
  • Add Lavabit email to iPhone and iPad

  • For both “Incoming Mail Server” and “Outgoing Mail Server” use “lavabit.com” as the hostname, enter your username and password in the respective fields, then tap “Next” again
  • Turn “Notes” OFF and leave Mail “ON” then choose “Save”
  • You are not quite done yet, you still need to set specific ports for outgoing and incoming mail servers. Go back to Settings> Email, Contacts, Calendars> choose your new “Lavabit” account, then tap your account name
  • Look under “Outgoing Mail Server” and tap the SMTP setting, then tap “lavabit.com” and under “Outgoing Mail Server” make sure SSL is set to ON, and set the “Server Port” to 465, then tap ” Done”
  • Lavabit outgoing mail port configuration in iOS Mail

  • Now tap back to the “Account” screen and now choose “Advanced” and look under “Incoming Settings”
  • Make sure that “Use SSL” is set to ON, and set the “Server Port” to 993
  • Lavabit incoming email settings in iOS

  • Exit Settings

Now go to the Mail app. Do a quick test and send an email to your newly created Lavabit address from another email account. Once that email arrives, also send a reply email to make sure everything is working properly. Note that if outgoing email doesn’t work, it’s probably because you haven’t configured the outgoing server port correctly, so jump back to that section of the walkthrough to set it up. When you have gone through the installation process, iOS will configure the Lavabit email as if it were a default email account and the ports will not be set correctly.

If you’ve never used multiple email addresses in iOS, you’ll find that the default display setting of the Mail app is to merge the two inboxes visually. To change that, or to only view messages from one email account at a time, tap “Mailboxes” and select “Lavabit” (or whatever other mail).
