So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Show a “Now Playing” Song Notification from iTunes in OS X Notification Center.

In previous versions of Mac OS X, you could pop-upup with the message “Now Playing” up above the iTunes Dock icon, the warning would show the song name and artist each time a track changed and this is a very popular adaptation. It turns out that hidden feature missing from OS X Mountain Lion, but with the help of a third-party tool we can do a similar one feature which instead sends an alert from the current song and artist to Notification Center in OS X.

How to Receive an iTunes “Now Playing” warning in Notification Center

You need OS X 10.8 (or higher) for this to work:

  • Download Play Now from MediaFire and extract it
  • Place “Now Playing” in your / Applications / folder and control + click the app and select “Open” to bypass the GateKeeper app warning and launch the application
  • Quit and restart iTunes, then play a song to see the Notification Center warning

The developer recommends restarting the Mac to run the feature to work, but we didn’t find it necessary as just a restart of iTunes was enough in our tests.

Every time you switch songs, the notification pops up on the desktop and then on to the global notification center panel, although it’s smart enough not to have your entire stack of playlists on top of each other in OS X’s notification center.

For those interested in how this works, it’s been done through a tweak to the great terminal notifier tool we wrote about recently.

We contacted the developer to try and find a better hosting service than MediaFire, as we know it is blocked on some networks we will update the link if possible.

Thanks to Ben for making this!
