Show Holidays in Calendar App for Mac OS

Check tutorial of How to Show Holidays in the Calendar App for Mac OS X

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Show Holidays in the Calendar App for Mac OS X.

With so many holidays spread over the year, it’s easy to lose track of when is what and what day is the next. Luckily, the Mac Calendar app makes it easy to switch the display of all holidays right in the Calendar app, so you never lose track of which date is Palm Sunday, Earth Day, Thanksgiving or Cinco De Mayo (ok that’s easy ), whether it’s this year or the next.

Sure, for most US vacations don’t have a particular impact on our employment status for that particular day, but they can still be useful to know for celebration or planning reasons. At the very least, they are an important addition to our calendars in defining a schedule around the dates, even if it’s just a trip to the DMV to renew a license or send out event invitations.

How to Show important holidays in the Mac calendar

Displaying important holidays in Mac OS X’s Calendar app is remarkably easy, although most users will find the setting isn’t enabled by default on their Macs:

  1. Open the Calendars app and access the Calendar menu to select ‘Preferences’
  2. On the ‘General’ tab, check the box for ‘Show calendar with holidays’
  3. Close preferences and go back to the calendar to see the holidays

The holidays are immediately visible in the Mac calendar. Technically, they show up in their own unique calendar, referred to as “US holidays,” so they won’t mole up any existing calendars you have created for work, home, school or personal. Since the dates are in a separate calendar, you can also quickly turn them off from the sidebar of Calendar apps if something is interfering with their visibility.

If you can’t see them immediately, scroll to a month view with a remarkable number of special days to see them on the specific dates, April is a good example:

Seen under the “Year” view, the holidays are scattered throughout the year as yellow markers on the annual calendar:

While the screenshot shows US-defined holidays, the feature should work with all other countries too.

If you’re big on celebrating and recognizing birthdays, there’s also a “ Show Birthdays ” setting in the Calendar app preferences right above the Holidays drop-down button, but keep in mind that the holidays are imported directly from Apple depending of your country settings, while the birthday setting requires user input per specific details to be entered for each specific person in your address book.

And yes, you can also turn off the vacation calendar if you don’t want to receive notifications about a vacation that you probably already know is approaching. Simply uncheck the box for “Show Holidays Calendar” in the preferences of the Calendar app.
