The iTunes sidebar has been part of the media player functionality since the inception of the app, allowing users to quickly navigate through iTunes and their media, and also easily transfer things like music and movies to their iPhones, iPads and iPods. However, the latest version of iTunes 12 takes a different take on things, and the interface has changed significantly by removing the sidebar and eliminating the option to show the sidebar from the View menu.
It turns out there is a way to show a sidebar in iTunes 12however.
No, the new sidebar won’t behave exactly like users used to in previous versions of iTunes, but it works to easily move media between iTunes and iOS devices, and allows you to quickly switch between playlists, appliances and your belongings.
- Open iTunes as usual on any media player screen
- Click on the “Playlists” button (it looks like text, but it’s actually a button, just like iOS)
- The media view will switch to ‘Playlist’ mode and a sidebar will appear on the left side, exiting playlist mode will hide the sidebar
You’ll find all of your music and media playlists in the sidebar, but when you exit the Playlists view, the sidebar will disappear from iTunes. So if you always want to see the sidebar in iTunes 12, you’ll need to stay in the playlist view, or at least switch to the playlist view if you need to.

If the look of iTunes here seems a bit grittier than what you have on your own Mac, it’s because the increased contrast option is turned on for OS X’s wider interface.
This new sidebar functionality applies to all versions of iTunes 12 in any version of Mac OS X (or Windows). Since iTunes 12 is the default in OS X Yosemite, there is no option to run an earlier version of iTunes, but users of OS X Mavericks and earlier versions of the Mac operating system may use an earlier version of iTunes. iTunes – Keep in mind that future versions of iOS will almost certainly eventually be incompatible with the older iTunes releases.
