Show User Library Folder on OS Mavericks

Check tutorial of How to Show the User Library Folder in OS X Mavericks

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Show the User Library Folder in OS X Mavericks.

All latest versions of OS X have taken a conservative approach to show the users ~ / Library / folder, a folder that contains a variety of important files, settings, preferences, caches, and many specific files necessary for apps to run such as intended. Due to the possibility of accidental damage to a user’s Mac, OS X hides that folder by default, with the intention of preventing novice users from making changes to it. OS X Mavericks is no different, but with the release of 10.9, all Mac users have an easy option to permanently display the user library directory without going to the command line or other tricks previously required to access the ~ / Library folder.

Permanently show the user library folder in OS X Mavericks

  • From the OS X Finder, open a new window and go to the users Home folder (press Command + Shift + H to go to Home immediately)
  • Pull down the ‘View’ menu and select ‘Show View Options’ (or hit Command + J if you like keyboard shortcuts)
  • Check the box for “Show Library Folder” and close the View Options panel
  • Navigate the users home folder to see the newly visible “Library” folder

Show the user's library folder in Mac OS X Mavericks

You may need to scroll down the user folder to see the newly visible Library folder. The video below shows how easy and fast this is, you can see the users ~ / Library folder in less than 10 seconds:

This setting is permanent as long as the check box is active, it does not need to be toggled repeatedly during OS X updates. If you decide that you no longer want the ~ / Library / folder visible, select the check box Home folders ‘View options’ panel to make it invisible again.

Note that for Macs with multiple users, this setting must be toggled for each user account individually. This is very helpful trick, although its usage is a bit more advanced than some of the more basic Mavericks tips we have covered.

Why don’t I see “Show Library Folder” in the view options? ‘

You have to be with the users home folder to see the “Show Library Folder” selection in View Options. If you don’t do the setting option, you probably aren’t in the home directory, so hit Command + Shift + H to jump straight to the user home folder and display the option. The “View Options” panel adjusts automatically depending on the folder you are in, which means you can leave it open

Quick access to the User ~ / Library folder from the Go menu

This trick that first showed up in earlier versions of OS X that kept the library folder hidden by default, and if you don’t want the ~ / Library folder to always be visible, it remains a reasonable option for occasional access to the folder:

  • Hold down the OPTION key and enter the “Go” menu
  • Select “Library” to go directly to the Users ~ / Library folder

Open the Library folder from the Go menu in OS X

There are a couple of other ways to get to the ~ / Library folder for quick access, all of which will continue to work in OS X Mavericks.

Make the ~ / Library / folder visible from the command line

For what it’s worth, users can continue to use the command line chflags approach to list the ~ / Library / directory, just like it was possible (and required) in OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion, but with OS X Mavericks, there is little reason to do this outside of scripting or automating the custom install process. The required chflag command is as follows, and it is not necessary to kill the Finder for it to take effect:

chflags nohidden ~ / Library /

Within the users home directory the ~ / Library / folder will appear:

Again, the chflags approach is no longer necessary for Mavericks, although it still works. For the vast majority of Mac users, simply toggle the setting as desired in Display Options or use one of the temporary access methods.
