Check tutorial of Stop the “New Interface Detected: Thunderbolt Bridge” Alert in OS X Network Preferences

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Stop the “New Interface Detected: Thunderbolt Bridge” Alert in OS X Network Preferences.

Many Mac users have recently encountered a “Thunderbolt Bridge” warning box that appears up when they visit the OS X Network preference pane, the full text of the message box says:

New interface detected A new network has been detected: Thunderbolt Bridge Make sure it is configured correctly and press Apply to activate it.

Because this can be seen up out of the blue for most Mac users, it causes quite a bit of confusion as to what it is, why it appears up, and what you can do about it … and we’re going to explain that here.

What is Thunderbolt Bridge? Why is it suddenly displayed Up?

Thunderbolt icon With Thunderbolt Bridge, you can connect Macs together to transfer files and data directly back and forth with a Thunderbolt cable, without the need for traditional file sharing methods such as AFP, AirDrop or Wi-Fi and Ethernet networks. Due to the impressive speed offered over Thunderbolt connections, a Thunderbolt Bridge transfer makes copying data between Macs extremely fast, at speeds of 10 GB / s. This is often used with the Migration Assistant to move everything from an old Mac to a new Mac at the fastest possible speed, but it can also be used for general file transfers and target disk mode as well.

To use Thunderbolt Bridge as a network option, you need a Thunderbolt cable and both Mac computers must be running OS X Mavericks or newer with Thunderbolt support.

Okay, so Thunderbolt Bridge is for networking, but why is it showing up random?

The reason most users are now seeing this message in the Network Preferences pane is probably because they recently updated OS X, making support for the feature in Mavericks. If you haven’t been to the network preference pane in a while, you will see it when you go there. Likewise, if you visited the Network Preferences panel, just clicked “OK” in the warning box and then ignored the addition, you will be nagged with the same warning box to inform you that the interface has been detected.

How to Stop the pop-up ‘New interface detected: Thunderbolt Bridge’Up from appearing

You have two options: add and ignore the interface, or remove the Thunderbolt Bridge network interface (don’t worry, you can add it back later if you actually want to use the service for file transfers):

Solution 1: Add the Thunderbolt Bridge network interface

  1. As usual, open the Network Preferences pane to open the “New interface detected” pop-up window and then click “OK” to ignore the warning
  2. Now select “Thunderbolt Bridge” in the preference pane and then click “Apply” button to set up the addition of the new network interface to OS X.

All of this is accepting the Thunderbolt Bridge as another network option, it doesn’t mean you should use it.

New Thunderbolt Bridge warning detected in Mac OS X

You should be able to close Network Preferences and never be bothered by this message again, but if for some reason it shows up you set it to ‘inactive’ again by doing the following:

  1. Select “Thunderbolt Bridge” from the network panel and click the gear icon
  2. Choose ‘Make service inactive’

Solution 2: Remove the Thunderbolt Bridge network interface

You can also choose to remove the Thunderbolt Bridge from an available network interface. This is the best solution if for some reason the above two approaches don’t work to get that warning message to go away.

  1. In the Network Preferences pane, click “OK” in the New Interface Detected dialog box
  2. Now select “Thunderbolt Bridge” in the sidebar and click on the little one [-] minus button to remove the option as a network interface
  3. Choose “Apply” to set the change

This is not permanent, but it will prevent the nagging window from appearing up in OS X Network Preferences.

If you decide you want to use Thunderbolt Bridge as a Mac-to-Mac network option later, just go back to the Network Control Panel and click the button [+] plus button, and add Thunderbolt Bridge again as a network interface option.
