Stop Power Button From Turning Off Mac Display on OS Mavericks

Check tutorial of Stop the Power Button From Turning Off the Mac Display in OS X Mavericks

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Stop the Power Button From Turning Off the Mac Display in OS X Mavericks.

The power button on newer MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models has changed to one button on the actual keyboard, directly above the Delete key. For the most part, this isn’t a big deal, but with the introduction of OS X Mavericks, tap that power button no longer prompts the Sleep / Restart / Shutdown dialog box, and instead now immediately turns off the screen, which can lock the screen if you have set a password.

For some MacBook Air / Pro users, that change in behavior means they accidentally hit the Power button is much more intrusive than before. If you are one of the users who accidentally use the Power button instead of the Delete key from time to time (since they’re pretty close together depending on your keyboard) you’ll be relieved to find that you can change the behavior of the power key in OS X with using a standard writing assignment. Like any other standard command string, the change is easily reversible if you decide you’re not happy with how the behavior is adapting, so we’ll show you how to do both.

You need OS X version 10.9 or later for this command string to work.

Change the Mac Power Button Behavior in OS X Mavericks

Launch the Terminal, located in the Applications> Utilities folder of the Mac, and enter the exact command as shown below:

defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem bool no

Hit the Return key to run the default command string, changes take effect immediately.

If this is off, you must hold the power button for a second or two to trigger the action before 10.9 by invoking the Sleep, Restart, and Shut down options.

Return to the default Mac Power Button Behavior in OS X

To return to the (new) default setting of Power button key drag the Mac screen, use the following standard command string instead:

defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem -bool yes

You will notice that the only change is the “yes” versus “no” syntax associated with the -bool flag, as is usually the case when reversing other default command strings. Again, changes take effect immediately and you return to the Power key behavior in Mavericks, which means the screen goes to sleep immediately when the button is being drained.

I discovered this at MacWorld after looking for a solution to repeatedly accidentally activating the display sleep mode on an 11 ″ MacBook Air. If you are frustrated with the same thing, give this a try.
