Check tutorial of The 6 Most Annoying iPhone Settings & How to Fix Them
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about The 6 Most Annoying iPhone Settings & How to Fix Them.
The iPhone is easily one of the best pieces of technology ever invented, but let’s just go ahead and admit that nothing is perfect. There are a few default settings on the iPhone that are just annoying, but in just a minute or two, you can fix all that with a handful of simple tweaks and have a much better experience.
All these tricks apply to just about any semi-modern version of iOS, including iOS 7, although of course the latter looks a bit different. Let’s start.
1: Goodbye to iMessage read receipts
Read receipts are those little “Read” notifications that appear when you or someone else sends you an IM message, and just as the name implies, they are displayed up to the sender to indicate whether the recipient actually read the message or not. Of course, that would be of limited use if you could control who sees it and who doesn’t, but you can’t. So let’s get rid of them all and get a little privacy:
- Open Settings and go to “Messages”
- Turn the “Send Read Receipts” switch to OFF
If you’re bombarded with tons of text messages that you can’t possibly answer, read receipts aren’t your friend. The ‘Delivered’ message is good enough, so grab your iPhone and turn it off.
2: Turn off the keyboard click sound effects
Do you really want small sound effects to play every time you type a character on iPhone? I don’t think so, let’s turn that off:
- Go to Settings then tap ‘Sounds’
- Scroll down and turn “Keyboard Clicks” to OFF
I admit there are limited use to this, especially if you initially learn to type better on the touch keyboard, but once you get the hang of it, they are annoying to you and everyone around you.
WAIT! Don’t close those sound settings completely just yet, though, because the next one tip is right next to it …
3: Lose the lock screen sounds
If you tap the power button to lock the screen, you will hear a click. When you swipe to unlock iPhone, you hear another click. That’s two too many clicks. This sound effect was useful in the early days of the iPhone, when we were all used to no longer accidentally calling people in the pocket, but with the touch screen and lock screen it became irrelevant, so it’s time to just turn this off switch:
- Go to Settings then tap ‘Sounds’
- Scroll down and set “Lock Screen Sounds” to OFF
Now you can silently lock and unlock iPhone. Much better.
4: Turn off unnecessary notifications and warnings
A common mistake for newbies to the iPhone (and iOS in general) is to tap ‘Allow’ button for every app that installs and wants to push notifications to your device. This builds up quickly up to a point of near-constant annoyance and whining from a myriad of apps telling you all sorts of useless bits of information that you really don’t need to push to the lock screen let alone Notification Center. Be distinctive with which notifications you allow, keep them with the important ones and disable the pointless crud:
- Open Settings and then tap “Notifications”
- Tap an app for which you want to stop notifications and alerts and turn “Notification Center” to OFF
- Choose “None” for Alert Style
- Repeat with any app that is not really helpful
This is one of those things I do for my less tech-savvy friends and family when I get their hands on their iPhones because they inevitably have way too many things going on that they complain about. This also has the nice side effect of extending battery life, so be selective and turn off the pointless things that send unnecessary alerts.
5: Turn off repeating text alert sounds
If you ignore an incoming text message or iMessage, you will be pinged twice with a warning sound; once when it arrives, and another in a few minutes to remind you. This happens even if you only have one message. How often most of us use our phones, this is simply not necessary.
- Go to Settings and then go to ‘Messages’
- Select “Repeating Alert” and choose “Never”
Goodbye repeating warnings, you won’t be missed.
6: Sayonara against the useless red badge icons
We all want to know how much phone phone calls we’ve missed, and how many new emails we’ve got, are helpful. But do we really want badge icon updates for every app? Probably not, especially for the useless apps or the ones that don’t do anything useful so go through Notification Center and clean this up up a little:
- Open Settings and then go to “Notification Center”
- Tap an app for which you want to turn off the red badge icons, then scroll down and turn “Badge app icon” to OFF
These have long been frustrating, and your home screen will be much less distracting if most of these little red icon additions are disabled.
