Transfer Music in iPhone, iPod, or iPad to Computer

Check tutorial of Transfer Music from iPhone, iPod, or iPad to a Computer

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Transfer Music from iPhone, iPod, or iPad to a Computer.

Everyone knows how easy it is to transfer music to an iPod, iPhone or iPad using iTunes, but have you ever tried to get music from an iPod or iPhone to a new computer? As it turns out, transferring music from iOS device to new or different computer is no feature that is supported in iTunes. Nonetheless, it’s easy to do on your own, and we’ll get you right through it how to copy all your music from one device and back to a computer.

The end result? The entire music library copied from an iOS device to a computer, ready for iTunes or whatever other media player you want to use. Let’s start!

Transfer music from iPhone, iPod or iPad to iTunes on computer for free

This process will copy all music from the device to a Mac or Windows PC:

  1. Turn off automatic syncing in iTunes, do this from iTunes Preferences> Devices> check “Prevent iOS hardware from syncing automatically” and close iTunes
  2. Download iExplorer from here (Free for Mac OS X and Windows) and install it
  3. Connect the iPhone, iPad or iPod to the computer via USB
  4. Launch iExplorer and click the arrow next to the iOS device name, then click the arrow next to “Media” and then again next to “iTunes_Control”
  5. Drag the entire “Music” folder to a location on the desktop, this is all your music and may take a while to transfer
  6. Transfer music from iPod or iPhone to computer

  7. Exit iExplorer when done

When done, all the music has been successfully copied from the iOS device to the Mac or PC, while also keeping the music stored on the iPod / iPhone.

If you’re happy you can stop here, but the music directory containing the music is arranged in a somewhat unusual way with songs tucked into some “F ##” folders with even more meaningless file names. The easiest way to sort and rename all of these files is to use iTunes to import the folder, and if you’re using iTunes for general media management anyway, you’ll want to complete this secondary process as well.

Import the copied music into iTunes

Assuming you want to import the music you just copied from iPod or iPhone into iTunes, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Disconnect the iPhone, iPad, iPod from the computer and restart iTunes
  2. Open Preferences and click on “Advanced”
  3. Make sure “Keep iTunes Media Organized” and “Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder” are both turned on
  4. Let iTunes manage music

  5. Now go back to the desktop and drag the entire “Music” folder to the iTunes icon or to the iTunes window, which will allow iTunes to import all the music

If you are using the folder alias “Automatically Add to iTunes”, you can also drag the copied music folder to that folder to migrate all music to iTunes. Whichever method you use, you will find that the songs that were once stored on the iOS device are now in iTunes on the computer.

In iTunes, it’s a good idea to turn automatic syncing back on from the Devices preference pane as well.

Various usage scenariosThe use of this solution is far and wide, but it is especially useful if your previous computer is unavailable due to a crash or loss, and you stop up with a new computer. In such situation, you cannot just sync the device with the new computer without losing data as you will not copy the original backup folders, but with this method, you can keep your music through the library from iPod or iPhone to the computer, which can then be synchronized again as usual. Hopefully future versions of iTunes will handle this natively for authorized devices, as it is frankly hugely useful.
