So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Turn Off Resume on a Per App Basis in Mac OS X Lion with defaults write.

In our post on how to Disabling Resume for Safari or other applications in OS X 10.7, several of our commenters pointed out that there is no need to change the permissions of individual app folders. Alternatively, you can turn off Resume on a per-app basis using a standard write command entered into the Terminal.

Turn off Resume per app

Here are a few examples of standard ranges for individual applications, and then we’ll show you how to find your own strings for other applications:

Disable Resume for Safaridefaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

Disable for Google Chromedefaults write com.google.Chrome NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

Disable for QuickTime Player Xdefaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

Turn off for previewdefaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

You want to restart any application for which you have the feature for the changes to take effect.

Disable resume for other applicationsIf you want to turn off Resume with other applications, you’ll want to access your personal library folder (remember that / Library and ~ / Library are different) so you can find the exact syntax of the app name. The folder you are looking for is:

~ / Library / Saved Application State /

I like the Go to Folder feature as it is easily accessible with Command + Shift + G, but you can also get there via Option-clicking on the Go menu.

Once you are in the Saved Application State folder of your personal library find com.developerName.ApplicationName.savedState, for another example we will choose Terminal which is in this folder as com.apple.Terminal.savedState.

Turn off Per-App Resume in OS X Lion

Discard the ‘.savedState’ extension and enter the first part of the folder name in the same command used above so it looks like this:

defaults write com.apple.Terminal NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

Enter that in the command line and restart Terminal and Resume will no longer be activated just for that app. As with the other method, you can do this with as many or as few apps as you want.

How to Turn Resume back on for specific applications

Re-enabling resume in Lion is as easy as disabling it, we just need to modify the default write command with a TRUE statement instead of FALSE. Taking Safari as an example, the command would be:

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool true

Restart Safari and you will find that Resume is back on. Note that if you have disabled Resume on a system-wide basis from the Preferences pane, you will need to re-enable it separately.

Thanks to our commenters who pointed out the standard writing assignments!
