Check tutorial of How to Uninstall XCode
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Uninstall XCode.
Below are new simple instructions on how to uninstall modern versions of Xcode. Removing old versions of Xcode is also covered, this is a thorough one guide to remove Xcode from any Mac regardless of version and Mac OS X release.
Xcode is Apple’s developer suite for iOS and Mac OS X, it is necessary if you plan to write apps for both operating systems and installing it includes some other useful utilities other than the main IDE itself. The additional aspects include things like the Interface Builder, iPhone Simulator, Quartz Composer, Dashcode, gcc, dtrace, perl, python, ruby, and many more that goes beyond the core development of iOS and Mac OS X, adding valuable utilities added to tweakers and administrators toolkits.
Installing Xcode is just a matter of downloading from the Mac App Store, but what if you want to uninstall Xcode?
How to Removing Xcode depends on the version you are trying to remove from the Mac. We will first cover removing newer versions of Xcode and then removing older versions of the app as well.
Remove Xcode 10, Xcode 9, Xcode 8, etc. from Mac OS X
Uninstalling newer versions of Xcode is very similar to uninstalling another app from the Mac:
- Navigate to the / Applications / folder and find the “Xcode” application
- Drag “XCode” to the trash and empty the trash as usual by right-clicking the trash icon and choosing ‘Empty trash’
Next, you probably want to delete the developer tools folder for users, which you can find in the following location – keep in mind that this also includes user developer data, so don’t do this if you have projects and other data in Xcode that you don’t back upup have made up somewhere else or you care about:
The folder is ~ / Library / Developer /, the user folder must contain the “Xcode” and “CoreSimulator” folders:
- Open the user home directory and go to Library
- Go to the “Developer” folder and delete it
Throwing out those folders along with the application should restore about 11 GB of disk space from the Mac and OS X is out of Xcode. If you have installed command line tools separately, this should not be affected by removing xcode itself.
Updating: Our readers pointed out that Xcode 4.3 greatly simplifies this process by bundling Xcode into a single application. Therefore this guide is most relevant to older versions. XCode 4.3 and later versions should be uninstallable like any other Mac app, while older versions of XCode require the manual process outlined below.
Completely remove Xcode from Mac OS X
Note that the removal of Xcode is different for previous releases of the app. However, the instructions below are still valid for all previous versions of Xcode, and you will find that this is not the same as uninstalling common Mac apps or even throwing away the default ones because Xcode has a much larger footprint, so getting Xcode u I will have to go to the command line.
This will remove everything related to Xcode from a Mac:
Do not forget to delete the Xcode applicationIf you uninstall Xcode, the original Install Xcode application is probably still in your / Applications / folder as downloaded from the Mac App Store, don’t forget to remove this too, or you’ll waste 1.8 GB of disk space.
Why remove Xcode?
If you are not using Xcode or its tools, it is a good idea to uninstall the suite. Why? The simplest reason is that Xcode up a lot of disk space, generally at least 7 GB of disk space is consumed by the installation, and the installation application alone is another 1.8 GB, which is a lot of storage capacity up by something that may be of no use.
Now that we’ve covered the basic process of getting rid of everything Xcode related and why some people might benefit from it, we’ll cover some more specific information and some other removal options that may be helpful for some users.
First, the above uninstall command with -mode = all actually only executes three separate scripts which makes the uninstall process easier, for those curious those are separate scripts:
These don’t have to be run independently, although you can choose to do this if you’d like, more below.
If you want to selectively delete parts of Xcode instead of everything, use the commands below. These are not necessary if you run the above –mode = all command.
Remove the Unix Development Toolkit from Xcode
If you just want to get rid of the command line side of things, you can do that with this command:
sudo / Developer / Library / uninstall-devtools –mode = unixdev
This is actually linked to the aforementioned “/ Library / Developer / Shared / uninstall-devtools” script. Personally, I think the unix toolkit is one of the most useful aspects of installing Xcode, so I’m not sure why you’d want to do this, but it’s good to know you can.
Only delete the Xcode developer folder and contents
This keeps other aspects of Xcode intact, but removes everything in the / Developer folder:
sudo / Developer / Library / uninstall-devtools –mode = xcodedir
This command is basically a shortcut to the previously mentioned “/ Developer / Library / uninstall-developer-folder” script. To delete the / Developer directory, run this command instead of manually deleting it through the Finder.
Remove Xcode system support
Only selectively remove Xcode’s system support (not recommended):
sudo / Developer / Library / uninstall-devtools –mode = systemsupport
This command only runs the following scripts: “/ Library / Developer / Shared / uninstall-devtools” and “/Library/Developer/4.1/uninstall-devtools”
Xcode data files locations
The full set of Xcode related data, which you may be backing upup you want to create or delete when you uninstall Xcode from a Mac, include the following locations and files:
~ / Library / Caches / com.apple.dt.Xcode
~ / Library / Developer
~ / Library / MobileDevice
~ / Library / Preferences / com.apple.dt.Xcode.plist
You can also manually delete those files, but again if you want to keep your environment, consider backing upup to make up the data before manually removing Xcode apps, files and components.
That almost packs it up. You may also be able to perform some of these tasks with an uninstaller like AppCleaner, but for best results, it’s a good idea to stick with the solution that comes with Xcode itself.
