So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Unlock the iPhone with a Fingerprint & Touch ID, Reliably.

Touch ID and the iPhone fingerprint reader have been around for a while, but a great one feature that doesn’t seem to be used much is the ability to unlock an iPhone with a touch and a fingerprint – that means you don’t have to enter the passcode when you want to unlock the iPhone. Instead, just rest your finger or thumb on the Home button, and the screen will unlock automatically. Whether some users have this Touch ID feature disabled, you have problems with the feature work as intended, or just don’t know it exists who knows, but it’s easy to set up up and it works pretty well if you have one trick to improve fingerprint recognition.

With that in mind, here it is how to make sure fingerprint-based unlock is turned on and, perhaps more importantly, works reliably well so it will unlock with every attempt.

Note, you will of course need an iOS device with Touch ID support and a fingerprint reader for this to work. As of now, those are the latest iPhone and iPad models with Touch ID feature built-in, and certainly all devices from now on will have the feature to.

How to Enable Touch ID Fingerprint Unlock in iOS

  1. Open the Settings app, then go to the “General” section
  2. Tap on ‘Passcode and Fingerprint’
  3. Choose ‘Fingerprints’
  4. Make sure that “Unlock Passcode” is set to ON

Touch Unlock ID Passcode feature uses a fingerprint to unlock iPhone

Once you unlock the fingerprint feature enabled, make sure you have registered the fingerprints with Touch ID that you regularly use to wake up the screen and unlock iPhone. For me, that’s my thumb, but for some users, it could be an index finger, middle finger, or whatever.

Improving the reliability of Touch ID fingerprint recognition

To make the fingerprint reader extra reliable, you’ll want to add fingerprints as usual, but with a twist; use the same finger twice (or more) during the installation process, but register them as different fingers:

  1. Select “Add New Fingerprint” and follow the instructions with the primary fingerprint you want to use
  2. Go through the settings for adding a fingerprint again with another finger
  3. Finally, go through the ‘add new fingerprint’ process again, this time using the same finger you used in the first step, your primary unlock finger, but at a slightly different angle

Exit Settings when you’re done or you can try it out right away by locking your iPhone and retesting just by swiping your finger over the Home button Touch ID sensor. If the same finger was added multiple times, but at slightly different angles, it should perform much better.

To be clear, this doesn’t stop the iOS passcode feature work or turn off, you can still enter the passcode to unlock the device if you want. If the Touch ID sensor does not recognize a fingerprint, or if you have not used the TouchID feature within a few days, you have to use the normal passcode to unlock iPhone anyway.
