So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Use Picture In Picture Video Mode on iPad.

Picture In Picture mode allows iPad users to open a floating video player or FaceTime chat that persists in a small overlay while performing other activities in iOS. For example, you can work in Pages or draw in Notes while watching your favorite sports team in a floating player window with PiP, it works a bit like floating a video or FaceTime call over another application window on a desktop computer. This is great multitasking feature for iPad users, and it is easy to use.

To use Picture In Picture (PIP) mode for video or FaceTime, you need an iPad with iOS 9 or higher, the rest is just a matter of accessing the feature in many different ways. The two easiest are with the Home button or by manually sending a video or call in PIP mode.

Method 1: Open Picture In Picture mode on iPad from FaceTime or a video player

Perhaps the easiest way to get into Picture In Picture mode is if you’re already in an active FaceTime video chat or watching a video in a compatible player app:

  1. While a FaceTime video call is in progress or a video is playing, press the Home button to reduce the video to the corner of the screen in Picture in Picture mode
  2. Open another application as usual, the PIP video will remain in the corner

Once the PIP video is playing, you can resize or move it to another place on the screen by tapping and dragging. You can also tap once on the Picture In Picture video to see the video player controls such as pause and play, or hang up and mute for FaceTime.

Method 2: Enter Picture in Picture mode on iPad from a video being played manually

Another approach is to manually send a video or FaceTime chat to PIP mode:

  1. Start playing a video from the internet or a supported app as usual, then tap to reveal the typical play / pause / volume buttons
  2. Tap the icon in the bottom corner that looks like a smaller box on top of a bigger box with a small arrow, this is the Picture In Picture icon and it will shrink the video to PIP mode

Keep in mind that if you are playing a Picture In Picture video from Safari you should keep that Safari window / tab open, although of course you are free to run it in the background or use any other app.

Escape from PIP mode is the same in both cases, just tap the video in Picture In Picture mode and then tap the little overlapping square icon on the video again.

Note that some apps don’t yet support sending to Picture In Picture mode, but viewing from Safari usually always works. If you try to use PIP and the app crashes, it is a good bet to update the application to the latest version. Picture in Picture also requires an iPad Pro, iPad Air or higher and iPad mini 2 or higher.

This is just one of many great multitasking options features that’s introduced in recent versions of iOS exclusive to iPad, two other prominent multitasking features for iPad include split screen mode and slide-over. Due to screen size limitations, these capabilities are unlikely to be available for the iPhone or iPod touch anytime soon, even with the Plus large screen iPhone.
