Use Split View on Full Screen with Mac OS

Check tutorial of How to Use Split View in Full Screen with Mac OS

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Use Split View in Full Screen with Mac OS.

Split View is new feature in Mac OS X, which lets you display two apps together in full screen and place them side by side. For example, you can put a Safari window into full screen mode and then split the entire screen with another app, such as Pages. With Split View, the windows automatically adjust for any screen size so you don’t have to drag them to fit the view, and it’s pretty easy to use once you learn how to access and use the split screen feature on the Mac.

This is a great one feature for anyone looking to focus, but researchers, writers, students, and developers will likely find this the most useful. We will cover two ways to enter Split Screen mode or Split View on Mac. Of course, you’ll need a modern version of Mac OS for this feature, anything newer than MacOS X 10.11 (or later) has access to this split screen feature on the Mac.

How to Use Screen Splitting on Mac OS

Almost all modern Mac OS apps support split screen, if they can be displayed in full screen then they can split screen with another app as well. As we said, there are two different ways to enter split screen mode in Mac apps, we’ll cover both. Let’s get to it:

Open split view from anywhere with any window in Mac OS X

Probably the easiest way to open Split View initially is through a long click on any green maximize window button.

Enter Split View with the green button on Mac

Here’s how it works, we’ll use Safari and Dictionary app as examples to split side by side in full screen split view:

  1. Click and hold the green maximize button of an active window (for example, a Safari window)
  2. Click and hold the green button

  3. When the window shrinks slightly and the background is highlighted, you are about to enter split view, holding the green button drag the active window to the left or right panel to place it there full screen
  4. Open Split View with a window in OS X

  5. Once you place the first window in the Split View panel, the other side of the screen will turn into a mini-Expose, similar to Mission Control, simply click on the window tile you want to open in Split View for the other side here to immediately send it side by side to split full screen mode
  6. Use Split View in OS X

Once you select the other full screen window, they will be side by side in split view:

Using split view in full screen in Mac OS X

That’s all there is to it, that probably sounds more complicated than it is so I would highly recommend trying it out for yourself as basically nothing can go wrong by testing it. Just long press the green button in the title bar of a Mac window and you’ll see for yourself how it works.

The video below shows this feature in Mac OS X with a Safari browser window on your favorite website (compsmag.com) and the Dictionary app:

You can exit Split View just as you would exit full screen mode in general, either by clicking green on one of the split windows displayed button again, or by pressing the Escape key. Either exit Split View in full screen mode, returning you to your normal Mac desktop experience.

You can also swipe to the side with a multi-touch trackpad or multi-touch mouse to return to the desktop from split view and then swipe back to return to the previously mentioned split view.

Use full screen split view from Mission Control on the Mac

You can also open Split View from Mission Control by dragging apps and windows around, this is a bit more tricky compared to long clicking green button method described above, but if you’re a huge fan of working from Mission Control you’ll appreciate this:

  1. Go to Mission Control as usual, then drag an app or window all the way to the top of the screen and drop it there, this will send it to full screen in that screen
  2. Now drag and drop another app or window onto the same screen thumbnail, this will bring those two apps together to Split View
  3. Click on the small thumbnail to open Split View for those two applications or windows

As usual, you can swipe left or right to return to the desktop or press the Escape key to exit Full Screen / Split View mode.
