So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Use Tile Window Multitasking in MacOS Catalina.

MacOS Catalina introduced a handy way to tile windows for multitasking, improving split-screen multitasking features that were available in previous macOS releases. These new simple multi-window multitasking options are available from any window and you can now easily choose to place a window to the left or right of the screen or jump straight to full screen mode.

This is not entirely new feature on its own (Window Snapping and Split View have been around for a while), but now it is arguably easier to use than ever before, and it behaves similar to the Split View feature on iPad. The new tiles feature is multitasking with windows without having to manually position everything, and it’s a great way to take advantage of any screen, small or large.

Apple’s decision to use the same Split View name of the iPad is no accident and does the exact same thing. By clicking one button you can move a window to the left or right of the screen. And if you want, you can even make that window fill the screen completely.

How to Tile windows in macOS Catalina

With macOS 10.15 Catalina installed, you should have the app you want to use on screen and ready to use.

  1. Move over the green button in the top left corner of the window. You can also click and hold if you wish.
  2. Click on the green icon

  3. Choose where you want the app window to go. The options are:
    • “Open full screen”
    • “Tile window to the left of the screen”
    • “Tile window right of screen”

You can then simply click on another window or app if you want two of them to appear side by side.

How to Use and Customize Tiled Windows in Split View in MacOS Catalina

Once you run apps and windows in Split View, you can interact with them as you normally would. You can also move them, view the menu bar and exit at any time:

  • Click and drag a window to the other side of the screen to switch positions.
  • Drag the vertical line between the windows to adjust their width.
  • View the menu bar by moving the mouse pointer to the top of the screen
  • Exit the tile / split view by clicking the green button in both windows

These specific tile windows feature of Split View is available for macOS 10.15 Catalina and above, while previous versions of macOS still have Split Screen app options, but they behave a bit differently and aren’t that easy to jump into. Likewise, you can use Window Snapping on Mac and go back to many previous versions of system software, it’s just not as point and click as this new Tiling Windows feature.
