If you make mistakes while typing on your iPhone or iPad, you are probably used to backspaces and editing your texts, but you may not necessarily be aware of the new gestures added to iOS that make editing text is a lot faster and easier. .

How to Use Undo and Redo on iPhone and iPad with gestures

The gestures we’re going to discuss here are exclusive to iPhones and iPads with modern iOS and iPadOS versions. They work anywhere on your device where you are allowed to type text information.

  1. While you can try this out in any app, we’ll be using the Notes app for this article. Just open the “Notes” app from it home screen of your iPhone or iPad.Notes icon in iOS
  2. Type something in the blank note at once. Now double tap anywhere on the screen with 3 fingers. You will see that the text you just typed has been deleted.

  3. Alternatively, after typing, you can swipe left with three fingers to undo the action. If your action was successful, it will be indicated by an ‘Undo’ badge at the top of your screen, as shown in the screenshot below.

  4. Now there is only one way to redo text messages other than the “Shake to redo” gesture. After undoing, just swipe right with three fingers to undo the action.

That’s pretty much all you need to do to undo and redo actions on your iPhone and iPad.

In addition to undoing mistakes you make while texting, actions can be both undo and redo within certain apps such as the Stock Mail app which is useful for quickly retrieving accidentally deleted emails.

Unlike the popular ‘Shake to Undo’ gesture most of us used until now, these new gestures don’t jump up a confirmation prompt on the screen, making it a lot faster to perform the action this way.

If you’re using an iPhone, this gesture will take some getting used to, due to the small form factor compared to performing the same gestures on an iPad. However, once you get the hang of it, you should phone to undo / redo.

The ability to undo and redo via gestures has been added in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, so you need to make sure you’re using a modern version of iOS or iPadOS to have this capability.

Like the gestures used for undo and redo actions, iOS and IPadOS provide plenty of other gestures to improve the usability of your iPhone or iPad. For example, you can quickly select multiple photos in the Stock Photos app with a drag and slide gesture, or you can zoom in and out on a video with a pinch to zoom in.

What do you think about the gestures added to iOS and iPadOS for improved text editing? Do you plan on using these new undo / redo gestures regularly instead of shaking your device? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
