So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about You Can Capture & Save Screen Shots with Preview in Mac OS X.

The Preview app for editing images and viewing photos in Mac OS X provides the ability to take screenshots directly from the application. The resulting images open directly in Preview instead of saving to the Mac desktop, allowing users to change file size, resolution, color, and file format.

There are three different screen recording modes available in Preview that are nearly identical to the standard keyboard shortcuts typically used on the Mac. Here is how to use any of the three options to take full screen (or screens) images in the Preview app of OS X:

  1. Start Preview
  2. From the “File” menu, select “Take Screen Capture” and choose one of three options:
  • From selection – brings up the selection tool, just like command + shift + 4
  • From Window – enables the window selection tool like command + shift + 4 + spacebar
  • From the whole screen – capture the entire screen (or both screens if using two), same as command + shift + 3
  • The screenshots automatically start in Preview where they can be cropped, manipulated, and saved. All of this happens instantly, with the exception of full screen capture, which displays a timer
  • Take screenshots with Preview in OS X

The timed screenshot feature was previously limited to the Terminal or Grab, but it’s quite handy to have it right in Preview, with the countdown timer up in the center of the screen:

Once the timer expires, the screen is captured and immediately launched in Preview.

When using multiple monitors, each monitor screen is captured and a new file is generated for each individual monitor connected to the Mac. So if you connected 4 monitors up on your computer you would take four screenshot files, or if you only have one internal screen, say a MacBook Air, it would generate only one screenshot for that internal screen.

I originally assumed this was a fairly new release from 10.7, but apparently this feature exists in many versions of the Preview app for Mac OS X, ranging from 10.6 Snow Leopard version of Preview to OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, OS X Mavericks and OS X Yosemite. Thanks for the heads up Make-up about compatibility for older versions of Mac OS X!
