Huawei P10 Plus Review: The Huawei P10 Plus is Huawei’s best phone yet. It gets the decent P10 and improves it in a variety of ways.

Its Leica camera is great in both light and dark scenarios, battery life is impressive, and it comes with a beneficial amount of storage. It’s the first Huawei handset that can easily compete with big-name flagships such as the LG G6, iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7.

It isn’t good – there are a few frustrating missteps along the way – however, with the P10 Plus Huawei has received a significant step ahead from churning out forgettable budget phones.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Design

P10 Plus

Huawei has been developing its basic design for a while now, tweaking its formula with every launch rather than beginning each time afresh. The P10 Plus continues in this vein, however with helpful modifications to keep it from feeling stale.

It’s obvious that the design influence here is the iPhone 7. It isn’t surprising to see Android phones that resemble Apple’s flagship. However, the P10 Plus takes it up a notch.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Display

P10 Plus

At times, the Huawei’s display is one of my most favorite issues about the P10 Plus – however, it’s also the phone’s largest weakness.

When it comes to quality and resolution, it excels. The 5.5-inch LCD IPS-NEO panel including a quad-HD resolution appears excellent. It doesn’t quite provide the inky blacks and saturated colors of an AMOLED panel – option in the Galaxy S7 Edge, for example – however, it isn’t far off. The use of an IPS panel also means the P10 Plus lacks help for Daydream VR.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Software

P10 Plus

Besides the years Huawei’s EMUI software – that is a re-skin across an Android OS base has received quite a lot of stick for being intrusive and generally over the top. Nicely, in EMUI 5.1 the company has its most mature and usable software to date, pulling back on a few of the continuous notifications and prompts for a much more balanced experience than before.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Hardware and Performance

P10 Plus

The P10 Plus (just like the P10) supports both dual-SIM or a microSD card if you wish to increase the storage. It’s also received a 3.5mm headphone jack and, thankfully, no “camera bump.”

The Kirin 960 processor is a real winner, and simply the quickest and most effective of any earlier HiSilicon chipset. It tops the Snapdragon 821 in common use and is likely more comparable with the expected Snapdragon 835, that will sit inside the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Whereas general performance is great, the handling of graphics could be better. The Mali G71 GPU is perfectly capable. However, games present slower and less smooth than on an iPhone 7.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Camera

P10 Plus

Huawei has paired up with Leica once again for this camera experience, delivering color and true monochrome sensors in respective 20-megapixel and 12-megapixel resolutions. The front camera is 8MP, and also Leica endorsed for the first time.

Huawei P10 Plus Review – Battery Life

P10 Plus

The P10 Plus is controlled by a 3750mAh, non-removable battery – that is pretty sizeable, even for a 5.5-inch phone. The Pixel XL, by comparison, comes with a 3450mAh battery and the bigger 5.7-inch LG G6 has a much smaller 3300mAh cell.

Conclusion

P10 Plus

The P10 Plus is Huawei’s greatest phone to date. It isn’t good. However, it ticks most of the boxes for a powerful 2017 flagship. It’s quick, appears attractive and has an excellent-sized display. The Leica-engineered camera is ace too, and the wider aperture makes a big difference when comparing it to the regular Huawei P10.

For £649, the P10 Plus serves much better worth than the £549 P10, especially with that generous quantity of base storage. It’s a nice phone, one that I wouldn’t assume twice about recommending.
