Step 1. To create a virtual machine, let us begin the VirtualBox and click the ‘New‘ virtual machine button in the toolbar.
Step 2. After clicking on new, Enter any name for the Virtual Machine, For example, Backtrack then choose the type of OS as Linux and Version as Other Linux.
Step 3. Once you’re done, Click Next.
Step 4. Just select ‘Create a virtual hard drive now’ and Click Create.
Step 5. Then it asks you to choose Hard drive file type. Select the default VDI (Virtual Disk Image) and hit Next.
Step 6. Then after you have to select ‘Dynamically allocated‘ and hit Next.
Step 7. And now comes the important half. Now you have to select the Size of Virtual Drive. I’ve given about 2.5 GB of disk space for Virtual Machine. You can give according to your wish.
Step 8. After you hit Create, the Virtual Machine will be created.
Step 9. Adding Backtrack Linux ISO to Virtual Machine, Now that you’ve created Virtual Machine, You want to add an ISO or Image file of an Operating System. To do that, Just click on the Settings button.
Step 10. In the window above, you have to choose Storage, then select empty. And finally select the disc icon on the rightmost side. That would open up a drop down menu.
Step 11. Now select ‘Choose a virtual CD/DVD disc file‘ and browse to the directory where your ISO or Image file is stored. In this case I’ll just browse and select BT5. ISO image from my hard drive. And just click OK.
Step 12. Now everything is set up. All you need to do is click ‘Start‘.
Step 13. After you click Start, The Virtual Machine boots up. Then it loads up the Operating System (in this case – BackTrack 5). You need to press Enter and then BackTrack starts booting.
