Google Pixel 4 – Introduction
Pixel 4 is Google’s latest smartphone (alongside the Google Pixel 4 XL) to create a phone showcasing The Best of Android and offering a cocktail of flagship features of photography, including machine learning and more. Other AI tools. It’s undeniably one for the Best camera phones you can buy to date, powered by Google Pixel 3, but upgrades are minimal elsewhere.
It’s a compact device that gives a unique design that you will not see in the other flagship products. This feature comes from its appearance, the materials it uses, and the fact that it is smaller than many other high-end devices, which can sometimes be a little too big for the average user.
Google has boosted the screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz that offers a smoother experience when scrolling through social media or when playing video games. Also, the chipset is robust, with a recent chipset associated with 6 GB of RAM. One of the areas in which the Pixel 4 will be most frustrating is the life of its battery, which at best is mediocre and, at worst, can be extremely fast to empty.
Google Pixel 4 – Design
Let’s start by talking about the new Pixel 4 hardware and, more precisely, its unique design. The first three generations of the Pixel were distinctly Google, identified by their two-color “window” back panel, a circular-centered fingerprint sensor, a left-mounted camera, and slightly rounded corners. Perhaps the most significant change this year is the metal rails on the side of the unit.
Google has applied to aluminum a matte texture that contrasts exceptionally well with all the colors of the camera and also matches the relief of the camera. This matte texture is also slightly more sticky than traditional polished metal. I would bet that over time, it will better conceal small random scratches than polished metal.
The back of Pixel 4 also differs from what Google has done so far. Finish the two-tone design, the minimal cut of the camera, and the fingerprint sensor. The re is also a part of the Pixel 4 design that everyone is not a fan of, and that’s what’s hiding around the screen. We will talk more about the screen itself, but the frames are an integral part of the design of this phone.
In the photos, they may look a little bigger than they do in person, but when using this camera, I have never found this telescope in such away. It feels less invasive than a notch only because technically, it consumes no space on your screen.
Google Pixel 4 – Display
The 5.5-inch LCD screen on the Pixel 3 has been replaced by a 5.7-inch, 90-Hz OLED display on the Pixel 4, which is brighter and offers a wider color gamut than its predecessor. The resolution is 2,280 by 1,080, for 444 pixels per inch (dpi). The largest Pixel 4 XL, meanwhile, has a 6.3-inch, 537ppi panel, but otherwise works identically. Smooth touch Display, Google’s name for its new 90Hz refresh rate, is the most noticeable change on the Pixel 4 screen.
The faster refresh rate is a greeting addition that has made its way onto phones like the Apple iPhone 11 Pro and the OnePlus 7 Pro and goes into gear when playing games or scrolling social media sites such as Instagram. Sustainability is on par with other flagship products. The Pixel 4 is mainly built from Gorilla Glass 5, so it is resistant, but can still be damaged by a steep fall. It has an IP68 waterproof resistance, so you do not have to worry about using it in the heavy rain or dropping it in the sink. That said, we recommend a good case for any phone you plan to apply for an extended period.
Google Pixel 4 – Camera
The camera always remains a key selling point for Google. On the material side, it’s not very exciting; Google has loaded a dual 12-megapixel base sensor and a rear viewfinder 16 megapixels. It’s far from the three and four-sensor configurations you’ll find on competing for flagship products, and I was worried about the lack of a dedicated wide-angle lens.
But the photographic excellence of Google Pixel phones has never really focused on their material. It’s Google’s advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technology, which gives them superior imaging capabilities. Google claims that artificial intelligence technology has been improved on the Pixel 4, the second sensor allowing it to capture even more data than the old pixels.
The dual sensor has also been used to add some exciting features that you will not see on the old pixels. The se include essential elements such as the usable 3x zoom and improved night vision mode, as well as some latest generation features, including the ability to separately adjust the foreground and background exposure.
Google Pixel 4 – Battery
Everything sounds good so far? As for the main thing, the Pixel 4 is an excellent material, apart from a key area: the battery life is rather unfortunate. I was worried about it by the time I saw the words “90Hz refresh rate” whispered in the same breath as “2800mAh battery”.
2800mAh is a pretty small capacity, even for a phone of this size. This, coupled with the additional power consumption required by a high refresh rate, means that it is too easy to discharge the Pixel 4 from its charge with a relatively heavy day of use. After an hour playing at PUBG, the battery had dropped from 60% to 30%, which is damn awful. The same thing happened when recording video in 4K.
With regular use, I could stretch for a day and a half, but the battery life of the Pixel 4 is shorter than that of most competitive flagship products. It is also slower to load, with Google charging it flat at 18W, which means the phone can take more than an hour to go from 0 to 100%.
Google Pixel 4 – Performance
The Google Pixel 4 contains the chipset Snapdragon 855, a flagship product of Qualcomm, which gives it its full extent and is complemented by the first increase of Google’s RAM for a Google’s Pixel phone. The first, second, and third-gen of the Pixel range are all 4GB RAM, but Pixel 4 sees that figure increase to 6GB, which further aligns the phone with the Android competition (although still many rivals and even, in some cases, 12 GB of RAM).
At the time we were using the phone, we found that it was fast, able to quickly load applications and games while offering everything we needed from a modern smartphone. Compared to other high-end phones of the moment, it’s good but not great, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus 5G scoring a similar score of 2 197, but these two devices are beaten by the OnePlus 7T Pro 2584.
At the time of the writing this review, it was not The Best chipset available on the market. The Snapdragon 855 Plus, designed to be slightly better for games, deserves this honor. But we found that the Google Pixel 4 loaded without problem applications and demanding games.
Google Pixel 4 – Face Unlock and Motion Sense
You hope that Pixel 4’s three-dimensional Face Unlock system will work well because there is no fingerprint sensor to rely on. Like Apple’s Face ID technology, Google’s policy combines a set of infrared cameras and illumination projector, and a spot projector to identify your face reliably.
The oretically, the unlocking of Google faces is secure enough also to be used for mobile payments. I say “theoretically” because none of my banking applications, which previously worked with fingerprint sensors, support this feature. This is a problem that Google recognizes must solve quickly, although this is primarily the responsibility of third-party developers.
In practice, however, the first Google crack at Face Unlock works well and offers some advantages over Apple’s approach. This works when the Pixel 4 is flat, and it even records when the camera is held in landscape orientation. The TrueDepth camera of the iPhone 11 can not match any of these claims.
Google Pixel 4 – Software
The software on Google Pixel 4 also works without problems. On the screen, you’ll find Android 10, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, which includes the company’s smart wizard and heartbeat. Google Assistant has been enhanced in Android 10, and Pixel 4 introduces a more intelligent voice assistant.
You can now ask her to open apps and search – for example, saying, “Hey, Google, show me Beyonce on Instagram” will open the social app and take you to the profile page of the pop star. The re is also a new way to activate the wizard: by swiping in the lower right corner of the screen. Alternatively, you can still use the word “Hey Google” or press the sides of the Pixel 4 – as on the pixels 3 and 2 – to give life to the voice assistant.
Overall, the Android 10 software itself is easy to use if you used an Android device, and we found that it worked smoothly throughout our test period. All top-performing Google apps are delivered right here, and everything works fine.
Google Pixel 4 – Verdict
Google Pixel 4 is the dream of an Android lover and a clear choice of editors. It features beautiful design, powerful hardware, a 90Hz OLED display, exceptional camera performance, and handy software that simplifies tasks more than ever. And you will not have to worry that it is quickly becoming obsolete, because Google guarantees at least three years of updates.
The only drawback is that the Pixel 4 has a storage capacity of 128 GB, which is pretty thin for anti-capture software for smartphones. If you are looking for the latest flagship phone with more storage, consider a handset of Samsung’s latest Galaxy lineup, like the $999.99 Galaxy S10 +. Like Pixel 4, it has a great camera, excellent build quality, and plenty of storage options.
If you want to save some money, the OnePlus 7 Pro at $669 is a safe bet that offers many of the same features, with a 90Hz display. But if you’re looking for the Best of what Android has to offer, the choice is clear: Get Pixel 4.
