Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review

Update - 2020.04.01

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review: Our favorite overall business laptop is taking some good upgrades this year. That features more powerful efficiency, stronger security options and a new way to troubleshoot technical points. With these improvements, it’s simple to observe the ThinkPad T470 renewing last year’s ThinkPad T460 as the top select on our Best Business Laptops page. In typical ThinkPad style, the T470 appears a lot like its predecessor, with a boxy magnesium alloy shell and a matte black finish. It’s actually a bit more portable, with a design that’s a hair slimmer and lighter.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Design

The dimensions hardly modified. However, you’ll be able to distinguish the new T470 from its predecessor still simply. The Chinese producer now once again uses a black chassis and waives the dark gray color scheme.

Overall, both the stability and the build high quality are superb, however, which is no shock, on par not quite with high-quality unibody metal constructions. One benefit of the T470, however, is the external battery (total of two batteries), which is easily accessible at the back.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Keyboard, TrackPoint, and TouchPad

ThinkPad T470

Lenovo equips all ThinkPads with good keyboards, however, the models from the P- and T-series usually get the most effective models. Lenovo obviously didn’t change anything compared to the previous ThinkPad T460, which is not a bad thing. Another benefit – also over the slightly thinner ThinkPad T460s and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon – is the comparatively long key travel.

The TrackPoint including three dedicated mouse buttons above the touchpad is also available for cursor actions.

Lenovo provides the new ThinkPads with so-called Precision Touchpads. That means inputs are directly handled by the operating system and not by a third-party driver. The smooth ClickPad from Synaptics is enough sized at 10 x 7 cm and works very nicely.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Display

lenovo thinkpad t470

The ThinkPad T470’ 1366 x 768 pixels, 14-inch touch screen provided sharp photographs, correct colors, wide viewing angles. When I observed a 1080p trailer for Captain America: Civil War, good features such as the lines in Steve Rogers’ forehead and the ridges in Captain America’s helmet appeared quite clear. Lenovo offers the ThinkPad T470s either with Full HD IPS screen.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Graphics and Audio

The Intel HD Graphics 620 (GT2) is a joined graphics unit, which can be found in varied ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processors of the Kaby Lake generation. This “GT2” version of the Kaby Lake GPU is clocked at up to 1050 MHz (relying on the CPU model).

The T470s gives a few of the richest audio I’ve listened from a business notebook. It comes with an Intel Kaby Lake-U/Y PCH – High Definition Audio.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Hardware and Performance

ThinkPad T470

With its 8GB of RAM, 512 GB M.2-SSD from Samsung and Intel Core i5-7200U 2.5 GHz, our overview configuration of the ThinkPad T470s supplied robust effectivity that was more than ample for any mainstream productivity process.

Lenovo provides the ThinkPad T470 with modern ULV processors and (optional) quick SSDs, so the business laptop is suited for many usage scenarios. The producer also gives models with the dedicated GeForce 940 MX graphics card (2 GB GDDR5-VRAM). However, it’ll probably not be available in all countries.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Battery Life

ThinkPad T470

Lenovo once again uses the Power Bridge technology including two batteries. A 3-cell battery with 24 Wh is positioned contained in the chassis. The re’s another “external” battery at the rear of the laptop, which can simply be eliminated.

Lenovo ThinkPad T470 Review – Configuration Options

ThinkPad T470

The Lenovo ThinkPad T470 20HD002HGE for 1,640 Euros among a trendy Kaby Lake Core i5-7200U, a 512 GB NVMe-SSD, 8 GB RAM as well as a matte Full HD IPS panel. The security tools are as comprehensive as ever and Lenovo now also contains a full-fledged Thunderbolt 3 port with a USB Type-C connector. The campus model (for teachers and students) of our test model has the designation 20HES01100 and is many more affordable at 1,200 Euros.

The new ThinkPad T470 put up a convincing efficiency in many sections, despite few drawbacks. The new chassis is only lighter and slightly smaller than before. However, both the build high quality and the stability are superb. The keyboard is still the most effective inputs in the mobile segment, only a slightly brighter background illumination would be good.
