LG Gram 17

LG Gram 17 – Introduction

When does a lightweight laptop have a 17-inch screen? When is done by LG? At 23 kg (1.3 kg), the company’s most giant notebook for 2019, the Gram 17, weighs less than the 15.6-inch models (except its own Gram 15), which matches the average of your ultraportable 13.3 inches. The battery life is surprisingly long (just over 12 hours), making it one of the 10 best long-life notebooks we’ve tested, along with two other LG models Gram.

In addition to its high-quality display, lightweight body, and long battery life, the Gram 17 is a relatively average ultraportable notebook. Importantly, the LG Gram 17 continues to offer similar performances to those of its siblings. Its processor is powerful enough to perform desktop tasks, and its integrated Intel UHD Graphics graphics processor seems to have enough power to cope with the necessary multimedia work – although AAA games are definitely out of the question.

LG has been forced to compromise for this huge 17-inch laptop weighs just over a kilo, but it’s still impressive to slip it into a backpack and forget about it even during daily commutes.

LG Gram 17 Review

My favorite tip for playing with the LG Gram 17 is to pick it up with just two fingers, which allows people to believe that I am a muscular man. In truth, it is an extremely lightweight laptop weighing only 1.34 kg, which is a real feat for a 17-inch device.

Never before have I considered going to the office every day with a 17-inch laptop in my bag, but the Gram 17 is so thin and light that I have not thought about it. Even after the testing process was over, I always found myself choosing this laptop as a work machine.

The LG Gram 17 is ultra-flat to 17.4 mm and therefore fits perfectly to most backpacks. And, while many notebook makers use the slender chassis as a pretext for avarice with the ports, the LG Gram 17 includes them in abundance. If you want to connect it to an external monitor, there are connections for USB-C and HDMI. For additional devices such as mice and keyboards, there are three USB-A ports, as well as the aforementioned USB-C port.

Port offers include a headphone jack and a microSD card slot, two incredibly useful tools, no matter what the wireless enthusiast.

LG Gram 17 – Display

LG Gram 17 Review

Indeed, if size matters, the LG Gram 17 has an advantage over most lifestyle laptops with its 17-inch screen, the display quality is probably more important. The broader view is no longer of interest if the picture is faded, and the colors are muddy. Fortunately, this isn’t the case with the LG Gram 17. Each reading via the colorimeter suggests that the LG Gram 17 is one of the best universal screens ever seen in a lifestyle notebook, especially more Quad HD resolution with many more pixels than a standard Full HD monitor.

With a 93% coverage of the sRGB color gamut, the LG Gram 17 features a striking screen with enough color to accurately display digital comic elements. This means that this laptop is perfectly capable of satisfying the needs of digital artists. If you use this laptop to browse the web and watch Netflix, the Gram 17 passes hands down. The maximum brightness of 373 nits easily outperforms the average of 300 nits. The dominant light should not prevent you from seeing action on the screen.

The black level of 0.25 nit is also in the target range, which gives a superb contrast ratio of 1466: 1. This means that the difference between dark and bright scenes is excellent, providing a clearer picture. Vivid. Laptop makers will aim for a visual color temperature of 6,500K for the purest image possible. The display of the LG Gram 17 reached a score of 6162K, which is close to the gold standard.

LG Gram 17 – Performance

LG Gram 17 Review

Take the LG Gram 17 and swear it’s empty inside. Surprisingly, this lightweight laptop is not only functional, but it also contains high-end components. There is a small problem, though. When you tested this notebook almost a year ago, the 8th generation Intel Core i7-8565U processor was still one of the central processor options available on a laptop.

The LG Gram 17 is not the fastest laptop on the market, but it always delivers fast performance that’s perfect for the office and lifestyle. What type of processing speed are we talking about here? The PCMark 10 processor performance evaluation software generated a 3425 result, which is not far behind some of the fastest tablet-based laptops on tablets. By comparison, the Dell XPS 13 had a benchmark of 3847 points, and the Asus ZenBook 15 had a 4038 blitz number. Be aware that these devices do not have 17-inch screens, but as LG had to reconcile performance and weight, it is impressive that the Gram 17 can keep pace with its competitors.

For real-life performance, the LG Gram performs basic tasks. Browsing the web, streaming videos, and running essential apps are all done quickly and without a hitch. Unless you frequently use intensive software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, it is unlikely that you will notice a significant difference between the processing power of the LG Gram 17 and the Asus ZenBook 15.

LG Gram 17 – Keyboard & Touchpad

LG Gram 17 Review

The LG Gram has the same keyboard style as its LG notebook. The keys are very-well spaced and offer a good distance of movement. I am a big fan of them, and although the returns are not incredibly clear, the keyboard is still quite suitable for preparing tests.

There is even enough room on the keyboard to insert a keypad, which the recent LG Gram 2 in 1 misses, unfortunately. This may be a minor point. Still, I appreciate that the function key and the corresponding function symbols are marked in orange, so you can see immediately which button changes the volume, adjusts the brightness, or activates the flight mode. You can own turn on and off the keypad backlight using the function key. The fingerprint sensor built into the power button is the last trick in the keyboard.

This means that you don’t need to enter a password every time you log in, press the power button. My one and only complaint with the keyboard layout is that the Backspace key has been reduced in width. As a result, muscle memory meant that I continued to press the “=” key when trying to remove typos, which became an insignificant nuisance. Of course, use Gram 17 quite often, and you will end up adapting.

LG Gram 17 – Battery

LG Gram 17 Review

The battery of a typical laptop can last from nine to ten hours when you browse the Internet, but not that of the LG Gram 17. Its four-cell four-cell lithium-ion battery, with a capacity of 72 watts/hour, has a powerful punch, which lasts longer than most 15-inch laptops we’ve tested.

LG says Gram 17 can reach 19.5 hours of battery life. When we cut a 1080p trailer, it worked about 15 hours before a stop. It’s a bit far from LG’s claim, but it’s still imposing. This is less demanding than our most intensive Basemark tests, which lasted about 5 hours. Finally, in our iMacro tests, the Gram 17 adds to the front, lasting about 12 hours.

LG Gram 17 – Verdict

LG’s Gram 17 is the lightest 17-inch notebook we’ve ever seen, which is quite an achievement. Combined with long battery life, it is an excellent laptop for business travelers or those who do not always have access to a secondary monitor for multiple tasks at once.

If you have to be 17 inches tall, another solution would be gaming notebooks such as the Dell Alienware 17 R5 or Dell’s newest Alienware Area 51m. Although these laptops have higher graphics power and faster processing speeds, they are still bulky and a bit flashy. Otherwise, Gram 17 is your best bet.
