According to the union, GM agreed to raise wages by 8.5% at a large plant in Mexico.

The plant’s new union, SINTTIA, announced on Thursday that GM has agreed to raise salaries by 8.5 percent in a new collective contract for its production hub in the central Mexican city of Silao. SINTTIA was elected as the plant’s first independent union in one of the first union elections under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which aims to close the wage gap between American and Mexican workers. According to SINTTIA, the arrangement also includes improved benefits such as increased bonuses, vacation time, and supermarket vouchers. GM declined to comment on the terms of the agreement ahead of a vote by workers on whether or not to ratify it later this month. SINTTIA had pushed for raises above inflation, which accelerated to 7.68% in April in Mexico. The group had initially had proposed an increase of 19.2%, which GM countered with an offer of 3.5%.
