According to the DESE, Springfield public schools will receive $156,203,270 from ESSER-3; Holyoke, $37,109,025; Chicopee, $22,315,108; Westfield, $10,776,685, West Springfield, $9,730,536 and Northampton, $3,389,608. School board member Peter Demling said at the June 8 meeting that the additional money is much appreciated and some urban districts are targeted to obtain much more than Amherst.
A total of $1.83 billion was allocated to Massachusetts in ESSER-3 recovery act funds for the K-12 public districts including charter schools. This federal allocation is known as the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief III (ESSER-3) Fund, part of the most recent stimulus money congress approved and that President Joe Biden signed into law in March. Two previous relief packages were approved in 2020.
