MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) release date, price, news and leaks

News Highlights: MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) release date, price, news and leaks

Apple currently has two different MacBook Pro models, a more compact 13-inch version and a larger 16-inch laptop. The latter replaced the old 15-inch model in November 2019, and the thinking is that when Apple updates the smaller MacBook Pro in 2021, it will increase by an inch in the same way – so we have the MacBook Pro 14-inch.

Although the latest MacBook Pro 13-inch (powered by Apple’s new M1 chip) was launched only a few months ago – in November 2020 – there is clearly room for the introduction of another new model later this year that could benefit of the same size. move like the larger MacBook Pro did.

Indeed, the rumor mill seems to be fairly confident that this will happen, and we’ve heard a lot about what the alleged MacBook Pro 14-inch might look like. That includes some potentially major design changes, so let’s get right into what they could be, and when we could see the arrival of this rumored new 14-inch incarnation of Apple’s notebook.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? An all-new MacBook Pro 14-inch
  • When is it out? Probably the third quarter of 2021
  • What does it cost? Unknown, but probably comparable to 13-inch MacBook Pro ($ 1,299 / ÂŁ 1,299 / AU $ 1,999)

There were a few potential release dates that rattle like rumors, but most recently we’ve come to believe that Q3 of 2021 seems like the best bet for a launch period.

This comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is widely regarded as one of the most accurate Apple speakers out there, and very recently reworked that we can expect the MacBook Pro 14-inch to debut in the third quarter. He previously indicated that it could be Q2 or Q3 of 2021.

Another revered Apple leaker, Mark Gurman, also very recently agreed On Twitter stating that we can anticipate a mid-2021 launch, which is in line with the third quarter. So we could possibly see the new MacBook Pro 14-inch as early as July, with it likely next to the updated 16-inch model.

When it comes to the price tag that Apple could be pinning to this new model, there isn’t a whisper indicating what to expect. We can only guess that Apple will continue to charge prices broadly in line with what is being charged for the current MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1 models), with prices starting at $ 1,299 (ÂŁ 1,299 / AU $ 1,999).

Apple did not raise prices for the MacBook Pro 16-inch when the larger model was introduced, keeping them at the same level as the predecessor 15-inch laptop. So hopefully it will be a similar story when it comes to the upscaled 14-inch notebook compared to the existing 13-inch incarnation it will theoretically replace (or maybe we can even hope the price will drop slightly – but that feels overly optimistic. ).

(Image credit: Future) MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) design

The most obvious change when it comes to the fundamental nature of this seemingly incoming MacBook Pro is the move from a 13-inch to a 14-inch screen (technically it would be a shift from a 13.3-inch screen , possibly to a 14.1-inch screen). -inch screen – or at least the latter is what Ming-Chi Kuo talked about earlier).

There’s no reason this step would mean the MacBook Pro 14-inch larger or less portable than its predecessor, as Apple managed to downsize the 15-inch model to a 16-inch screen by making the bezels much thinner. overall chassis size almost the same. The same should be true for the increase from 13-inch to 14-inch, we hope; slimmer bezels, with roughly the same form factor.

The larger screen was the main change for the original MacBook Pro 16-inch, but with this new 14-inch model we can expect more design changes, at least according to the speculation we’ve heard.

Ming-Chi Kuo has said that the new MacBook Pro 14-inch will move away from the ’round design’ that Apple currently uses to a ‘flat-edged’ form factor design, a design reminiscent of the iPhone 12‌.

Kuo also believes the cooling system will be improved, with the new 14-inch model adopting the same heat pipe design as in the existing MacBook Pro 16-inch. That cooling configuration is apparently far superior to the current MacBook Pro 13-inch, and should deliver an impressive performance on its own, which is good to hear. Remember that with better cooling the CPU can run faster.

There’s also potentially bad news about the Touch Bar – or even good news if you’re not keen on the latter feature, as Apple is apparently considering the option of removing the context-sensitive touch strip on the top of the keyboard.

Kuo believes Apple is removing the Touch Bar and reverting to simple function keys, which seems like a pretty brow-raising admission of defeat. This is just a rumor, of course, but it’s backed by Mark Gurman, who notes that Apple has tested 14-inch (and 16-inch) versions of the MacBook Pro without the touch strip. Gurman’s report says nothing about the outcome of those tests and whether Apple will actually take action to remove the Touch Bar (from some models and maybe not others?). As always with the rumor mill, only time will tell.

Another interesting design point is the apparent return of the MagSafe® charging connector, something Kuo and Gurman both claim happens with the MacBook Pro 14-inch (and again the revamped 16-inch). This will reportedly facilitate faster charging, and if you’re not familiar with MagSafe‌ it uses a magnetic connection – so pulling the cable simply detaches it (rather than pulling it on the laptop, potentially dislodging it. a table falls). , say).

If MagSafe‌ returns, it’s not clear if Apple will retain the ability to charge via USB-C in a pinch.

Speaking of ports, Kuo says the 14-inch MacBook Pro will have more. Although he doesn’t elaborate on what to expect beyond “more types of I / O [input/output ports]And that “most users may not need to purchase additional dongles,” which must be good news; if true, of course.

It’s worth bearing in mind as we discuss the various points of the rumor mill that some of these (or even most of these) may not materialize – but as sources go, for Apple, Kuo and Gurman are leading players.

(Image credit: Future) MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) leaks and rumors

So, what about other leaks aside from those possible design moves? As we said at the outset, Apple has already moved away from Intel CPUs with the latest MacBook Pro 13-inch using its own ARM-based M1 chip. Therefore, a 14-inch successor would certainly stick with Apple’s silicon – and probably a more powerful version than the M1.

Gurman claims the MacBook Pro will use 14-inch “next-gen versions” of Apple’s processors, which according to its internal source will have “more cores and improved graphics” – and we’ve heard that elsewhere.

The next-gen offering, which could be called the M1X, could raise the ante to 12 cores, or even 20 cores according to another rumor, but be sure to treat this particular bit of speculation with some serious caution. Mind you, those cores wouldn’t all be full power, while some are super efficient cores instead: the 12-core CPU would theoretically be 8 normal cores plus 4 low power cores, with the latter able to keep things ticking in undemanding situations (at low battery power).

As we heard from @LeaksApplePro on Twitter: “If you think M1 is fast, you haven’t seen M1X”. And we think the M1 is fast – very fast (we’re not alone in that regard, of course). The prospect of a significantly faster Apple chip in the MacBook Pro 14-inch is very exciting.

You may also remember speculation that the MacBook Pro 14-inch could do something completely different with the screen, using Mini-LED technology, which would provide more vivid colors and better contrast and brightness.

In the past, Kuo pushed the idea that by 2021 (and the year after) there could be MacBook Pro models that will have a Mini LED screen. However, his most recent research paper on the MagSafe and Touch Bar capabilities makes no mention of Mini-LED – which seems like a strange omission when it comes to it.

Gurman says his source believes Apple plans to “enhance the displays in its new MacBook Pros [14-inch and 16-inch] with brighter panels with higher contrast ”, but again, there is no mention of Mini-LED. That doesn’t rule out the tech – after all, Mini-LED would indeed offer the aforementioned imaging benefits – but the rumor now seems like a shaky prospect given the lack of direct mention in the reel’s latest nuggets.

Another piece of speculation theorizes that Apple will go the other way with the Touch Bar, and instead of throwing it out, a possibility we discussed above, the company could keep it and even improve it; possible with Force Touch technology.

With Force Touch, the amount of pressure used in a touch action can be recorded, meaning different functions can be assigned to the same icon – based on the pressure applied – to put more functionality in the Touch Bar. However, this seems like one of the less likely prospects as it is patent-only based, and these often don’t come to fruition (or at least take a long time to arrive).
