Apple is still in the early stages of transitioning to micro-LED display technology, but the company has big plans for the future. According to a new report, Apple’s current plan is to incorporate micro-LED technology into all of its products, but it “could be a decade” before it reaches the Mac lineup.
Apple’s ambitious micro-LED plans
As a refresher, we’ve heard a lot about Apple’s plans to overhaul the display technology used in its products over the last week. In addition to switching to micro-LED, Apple intends to begin producing its own displays rather than relying solely on outside partners such as Samsung and LG.
The transition is expected to begin with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, but Apple’s plans go far beyond that. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple eventually hopes to incorporate micro-LED technology into its entire lineup of iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch devices.
However, because micro-LED is still a “nascent and complicated” technology, we’re likely a decade away from seeing this:
I believe Apple intends to incorporate microLED into all of its products, from iPhones to iPads to Macs. However, the technology is still so new and complicated that it could take a decade before it appears in a Mac. Remember that these transitions can take a long time: the iPhone had OLED screens six years before the iPad is expected to get them.
Micro-LED displays have several advantages over mini-LED and OLED displays, including increased brightness, more vibrant colours, and better viewing angles. We anticipate significant improvements in efficiency and overall integration with Apple devices as Apple transitions to in-house displays.
