It is announced that, President Joe Biden is set to gather a group of technology leaders on Tuesday to engage in discussions about artificial intelligence (AI). The Biden administration aims to find effective ways of regulating this emerging field, with a focus on nurturing its potential for economic growth and national security while guarding against potential dangers. In an effort to gain insights and expertise, Biden plans to meet with eight experts from academia and advocacy groups.
The rapid advancement of AI technology, exemplified by the rise of AI chatbot ChatGPT and other tools, has sparked significant investment in the sector. These AI tools have demonstrated the ability to generate human-like text, music, images, and even computer code. While such automation holds promise for increasing worker productivity, experts also warn about the various harms associated with it.
One major concern is that AI technology could replace human workers, leading to widespread job layoffs. Additionally, there are growing concerns about the use of AI in creating fake images and videos that can be utilized as vehicles for disinformation. Such misuse could undermine democratic elections by spreading false information.
In May, President Biden convened a meeting at the White House where he gathered chief executives from prominent technology companies to discuss these pressing issues. During this meeting, he emphasized both the enormous potential and danger inherent in their work.
To address these challenges effectively, White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients’ office is currently developing a series of actions that the federal government can take regarding AI within the coming weeks. Senior officials are engaging in frequent discussions on this topic alongside their daily responsibilities at federal agencies. The administration seeks commitments from private companies regarding addressing potential risks associated with AI.
President Biden will hold his discussion on Tuesday at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. Among those attending will be Tristan Harris, executive director of the Center for Human Technology; Jim Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media; and Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, among others.
Furthermore to his AI-focused engagements, President Biden is also in the San Francisco area to raise funds for his 2024 re-election campaign. He has planned two fundraisers on both Monday and Tuesday, with Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of AI, Kevin Scott, hosting one of the events on Monday.
