Beal’s next chance to return to the lineup will come Friday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. That is the second-to-last game of the season for the Wizards, who currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference and hold a spot in the play-in tournament. Washington will close out the regular season against the Hornets, a team it is currently one game behind for the eighth seed, on Sunday.
Beal, who suffered the hamstring injury late in an overtime win against the Pacers on Saturday, had already been ruled out of Monday’s game against Atlanta. Now, it appears Beal will not play in the rematch on Wednesday either.
Beal’s injury came at the tail-end of an incredible performance on Saturday, as the second-leading scorer in the NBA dropped 50 points in 39 minutes. The All-Star currently trails Steph Curry by .5 points for the scoring title, but his absence over the next two games could close the book on his chance to jump to the No. 1 spot.
The injury also means Beal will be on the sideline on what could be a historic night for teammate Russell Westbrook.
Westbrook is poised to break Oscar Robertson’s all-time record for triple-doubles during the week. The veteran guard recorded his 181st triple-double to tie the record on Saturday.
