The Peaches baseball team, based in Chandler, is now raising money to go to nationals in Maryland in July. The last time the Peaches made it to nationals, they placed second.
The team says they know Leighton will be cheering them on and support them as their “angel in the outfield” this summer. “We all know that she’s always with us, so that’s all that matters,” Lauren Camp, a Peaches player, said.
“Leighton Accardo was the original Peach,” Peaches baseball coach Tina Royer said. “She has driven this team and she continues to drive this team. And we will be wearing our Leighton 49 on our sleeves when we hit the field at nationals and we will leave it all on the field for Leighton.” Leighton lost her battle in November. But her baseball team is keeping her memory alive. They’re trying to raise money to go to Nationals to play in Leighton’s memory.
Leighton was diagnosed with cancer in May 2018. She remained a loyal Coyotes fan, hockey player and baseball player throughout it all. “It’s been very sad, but I know she’s always in the outfield with me and I know she’s always in our hearts,” said player Lauren Camp. “There’s a picture of her on the red trailer so we always give her knuckles before every game and sometimes she gives us a win.” Nine-year-old Leighton Accardo captivated the organization last season with her smile and determination in fighting cancer.
