Glynn, 33, and his wife, Lauren, started DragonHawk Fitness, a Crossfit-inspired gym on the Southside Mall in Oneonta in February. The 5006 State Highway 23 location is the latest iteration, said Glynn, a similarly named but Crossfit-affiliated gym that the couple opened in 2017.
Matthew Glynn, who lives in Unadilla, traded technique for practice.
“I moved to the area when I got a job as an engineer at Amphenol (Aerospace in Sidney) after graduating from RIT (13 years ago),” said Glynn. “I didn’t know anyone in the area, but one of the things I always wanted to do was martial arts, so I found the onion tatai quad …, got a black belt, and started training in competition. I wanted to be good at sparring, but I needed good high-strength endurance. I met my wife doing a tie-kound … and then (she) I was back in the exercise. She was one of the OGC Crossfitters — she was out in California for school, so she was there when it first started — and she went to the Crossfit gym here. He joined and said, “Hey, you’re really good.” “
Grin said skepticism quickly replaced enthusiasm.
“I didn’t do that for a few months because I said,’Oh, this is like a bunch of Malakey,’ and she became a (CrossFit) coach,” he said. “I said,’Let me see what it is,’ and the guy went through a very short but very humble workout … and I thought.
“We’ve been there for two years and learned the methodology (of Crossfit) and what its purpose is,” Glynn continued. “I realized that this was all and a lot was happening here. I probably learned how to do the wrong exercise three times, but in fact the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Once you start learning about Crossfit, it makes the most sense. It has repeatedly proven to be the least common and most effective injuries. “
Grin said he and Lauren tried to buy the gym, but the plan failed, leading to the first Dragon Hawk.
“We were watching it go,’we were able to do this,’” he said. “So we considered finding a space and made a decision. We can actually do it for our community and improve people’s lives in a meaningful way. I found that it was very well aligned with our values. I decided to quit my job and become a full-time person at the gym. “
According to Grin, the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred the relocation of the gym from the refurbished Service Bay of the Flagpole Nissan Building in Oneonta to the South Side Site. “We did a lot of work (at Flagpole), where we temporarily expanded to Thai Quant School, after which a pandemic broke out and closed,” he said. “Luisa (Montanti) was the manager of Southside Mall and a member at the time, so she said,” You can keep yours in my space, “so we … I moved and refurbished my old Radio Shack. It was a huge improvement in our training space and it was great because it has a larger floor area than we had and the higher ceilings and floors are actually horizontal. “
Also during that transition, Glynn discontinued Jim’s partnership with Crossfit to gain entrepreneurial autonomy and became DragonHawk Fitness. As DragonHawk Fitness said, Glynn can better fulfill his mission.
“Our main service is group fitness classes. It’s like group personal training and we have a coach and our only job is to make sure you’re doing the right thing,” he said. Said. “It offers training tailored to your goals. Crossfit has a saying. People’s fitness needs depend on the degree, not the time. Grandmothers and Olympic athletes need the same type of fitness. But they need different levels. Everyone goes (to the gym) for a specific reason-getting stronger, losing weight, getting ready for competition-and in our group class (people) Are doing the same training at the same time, but with variations, what does everyone get? They need. “We run four group classes a day from 5:30 am, which is about an hour,” Glynn continued. “Now, what really matters to me is that I’m responsible. It’s an element of education. I want people to know how to do it right. You go to the gym for good health, and Injury is the opposite of health, so we have a dedicated team of coaches, and that’s what they do. “
According to Grin, Dragonhawk also offers personal training and the barbell club, a weightlifting group related to weightlifting at the US Olympics. DragonHawk’s customers are diverse and growing, he said.
“It’s Cooperstown in Delhi and we’re out to Sydney for our core demography,” he said. “Women aged 30-40 have the highest proportion of people in the same group, but they are also older men and women, and younger men and women.” According to Grin, as the number of members grows, we want to connect with the community.
