The Delhi Supreme Court on Monday suspended a petition hearing against WhatsApp’s new privacy policy until April 19 after the central government asked for more time to investigate the matter.

A one-person bench of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva asked the center to file a status report and put the matter on the agenda for April 19.
The court noted that the government is investigating the matter and gave the center more time to respond to the matter.
Attorney Kirtiman Singh, acting on behalf of the Center, told the Court that the government is in the process of obtaining certain clarifications and will need time to study them.
He also told the court that the Supreme Court has already issued a statement on a similar request regarding WhatsApp’s updated policy.
At the latest hearing, the central government had told the Delhi Supreme Court that the different treatment of Indian users with regard to WhatsApp’s privacy policy is a concern as messaging application policies differ for users in the European Union.
The government told the court that the data protection bill is pending and that the central government has requested a response from WhatsApp and that the center is concerned about how Indian users will not be given the option to choose.
The court heard a petition for a court order against WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy. The petition was filed by Chaitanya Rohilla through lawyer Manohar Lal.
Manohar Lal, the petitioner’s lawyer, told the court that the government had introduced a data protection bill, but it never saw the light of day.
