Disagreement Over How to Proceed with European Coronavirus Contract Apps

Apple and Google are working together to create contact finder apps to reduce the spread of the corona virus. However, there is disagreement about progress in Europe, Reuters reports.

Scientists and researchers from more than 25 countries issued an open letter on Monday urging governments not to misuse these technologies to spy on their people and warn of risks in an approach advocated by Germany. “We are concerned that some” solutions “to the crisis, through mission shifts, could lead to systems that would allow unprecedented oversight of society as a whole,” said the letter, which yielded more than 300 signatures. Tech experts are rushing to develop digital methods to fight COVID-19, a flu-like illness caused by the new corona virus that has infected 2.4 million people worldwide and has been linked to 165,000 deaths.
