Ann Arbor PFAS levels rise again. City says it’s coming from Wixom. The last three test results from January and February were double and triple the levels from last spring. Ann Arbor officials have said they believe the growing pollution is coming downstream from Wixom. Other U.S. companies received awards for providing solutions for air quality, clean and safe water, land revitalization, homeland security, sustainable materials management and safer chemicals.
Purafide, LLC falls into the land revitalization category, cited as a a “novel plasma water reactor for PFAS remediation in potable reuse systems,” according to the release. “We have the opportunity to confront our greatest environmental challenges with the strength and creativity of American entrepreneurs,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in a statement. “I congratulate all of the small businesses receiving EPA funding today. I look forward to working with them to harness the power of innovation to build a healthier, safer and more equitable future.”

PFAS levels in the Huron River, where Ann Arbor draws most of its drinking water, have soared in the past year. Test results from Barton Pond water samples showed four readings between 15.6 and 20.9 parts per trillion in May 2020, then increases each month to reach 58.4 ppt by December. Businesses in the Small News Innovation Research program are receiving phase one awards of up to $100,000 for six months for “proof of concept” of their technology. Then they can submit a proposal for a second phase award of up to $400,000 to further develop their technology.
