Facebook Publishes First COVID-19 Maps

On Monday, Facebook and the institutions it works with published the first reports and maps made up of data on COVID-19 collected on the social network. The company is collaborating with various institutions such as Carnegie Mellon, New York University and the Mila research institute to carry out this work.

Facebook collects data to combat COVID-19

Write in the Washington PostMark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, said Carnegie Mellon’s team “receives about 1 million responses a week in the United States,” on COVID-19 follow-up studies distributed on Facebook. “The results are very promising,” he added. “They correlate with publicly available data on confirmed cases, suggesting that these data may help predict where the disease will spread.” Zuckerberg said the data “can also be used to construct detailed information by province.”

Facebook produces its own maps, based on aggregated data from Carnegie Mellon. These maps are updated daily. “Facebook can only help researchers and health officials to get the information they need to respond to the epidemic and plan for recovery,” said Zuckerberg. He also addressed privacy issues, noting that data is collected only to respond to COVID-19. It is “essential that this be done in a way that protects people’s privacy and respects human rights,” Zuckerberg wrote.
