Following backlash from fans, Ubisoft has decided to put Ghost Recon Frontline on hold indefinitely

Ghost Recon Frontline, a free-to-play, player-vs-player battle royale shooter set in the Ghost Recon universe, stunned everyone earlier this month. Fans of the franchise, on the other hand, have been less than enthusiastic, and it was impossible for Ubisoft to ignore the flood of critical criticism the announcement trailer created.

Following the negative response to the game’s announcement video, Ghost Recon Frontline has been postponed indefinitely.

As VGC reports, in an announcement posted on the GRFrontline Twitter account, the development team said they were delaying the Closed Test for Ghost Recon Frontline and gave no further information as to when it could appear. Instead the message states, “The development team is dedicated to creating the best experience possible. We’ll share details on the new date for the Closed Test as soon as we can.” The link for a chance to play the game early now leads to a 404 error page.

One look at the YouTube comments for the reveal trailer shows you how gamers reacted. “Nobody. Absolutely nobody asked for this” and “R.I.P. Ghost Recon, at least Tom Clancy isn’t still alive to witness this trash” sum up the feedback Ubisoft received. Add to that 17,000 dislikes compared to the 4,400 likes the video generated and clearly something needed to be done.

Attempting to turn any popular game franchise into an free experience reliant on microtransactions is always going to spark controversy and anger, but the reaction to Ghost Recon Frontline is on a level where it looks as though Ubisoft is being forced rethink the whole project. Will it ever see the light of day again? We’ll just have to wait and see.
