News Highlights: Forget iPhone 13: Minor ‘iPhone 12s update scheduled for 2021

In the past, Apple alternated between full numbers iPhone updates (such as the iPhone 4, 5 and 6) and less dramatic S updates (such as the iPhone 4s, 5s and 6s). It was clear that the biggest changes in design and technology were reserved for the earlier class of handsets, while the S updates were more cautious refinements to the previous year’s model.

Apple seemed to have abandoned that strategy in 2015: the 6s was the last S-Class update to be announced. In the years that followed, the company was less humble, insisting that all subsequent iPhones deserve a full number bump and even, in one case, push the number forward by one jump from 8 to 10 (or X).

But rumors suggest the S strategy will make a comeback in 2021. The latest report predicts that the iPhone 12 is followed by the 12s, instead of the iPhone 13, and that this more conservative branding will be reflected by a lack of dramatic changes: the design will be identical to the iPhone 12, and …
