News Highlights: Xbox Live Gold Price Changes Reverse free-to-play games no longer require a subscription
Microsoft immediately returns the recent price hike after widespread backlash.
Microsoft recently announced that they would increase the prices of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, the online service needed to play online games on Xbox consoles. Overall, the announced price increases have been quite steep. While the monthly subscription price only increased $ 1 (which would still have been a healthy amount in the long run), the three-month plan saw an increase of $ 5, while the six-month plan saw a 50% increase to $ 60.
The changes met with widespread backlash and criticism, and Microsoft has now responded to that backlash as you would like. In an update on Xbox wire, they have confirmed that they are reversing the price increases and that you can still expect to buy Xbox Live Gold subscriptions at their previous prices: $ 9.99 for 1 month, $ 24.99 for 3 months and $ 39.99 for 6 months.
“We messed up today and you were right to let us know,” reads the update. “Connecting and playing with friends is an essential part of gaming and we fell short of the expectations of players who rely on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold prices. “
In fact, it looks like Microsoft is going almost in the opposite direction in a rather sudden turnaround. Paying for Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, even to play free games, has always been something Microsoft has been heavily criticized for, but it won’t be in the future. If you want to play a free game online, you no longer need a Gold subscription.
“We take this moment as an opportunity to bring Xbox Live closer to how we put the player at the center of their experience,” Microsoft writes. “Free-to-play games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to implement this change as quickly as possible in the coming months. “
Reports surfaced in the middle of last year suggesting Microsoft was considering discontinuing Xbox Live Gold altogether and making online gaming on the console free. Shortly after, Microsoft responded to those reports, saying no such changes were planned.
