An upcoming device will have Fuchsia installed from the start, according to a quickly deleted Google planning document.
Google has updated the original Nest Hub and the Nest Hub Max in recent years to run on the company’s homegrown Fuchsia operating system rather than “Cast OS.” While many other Google devices have yet to be updated to Fuchsia, the next step we’ve been waiting for is something that runs Fuchsia out of the box.
Fuchsia developers submitted a new document last week explaining an upcoming project. This document was viewed by 9to5Google before it was hidden from the public.
According to the document, Fuchsia will gain JavaScript development support, which will make it easier to manage and control the features of a device. The work is being done specifically to support “factories,” where new devices are tested while in production.
Fuchsia will eventually be used as the operating system on devices when they are manufactured in factories.
More importantly, Fuchsia’s JavaScript support appears to be required in the first half of 2023 because a Fuchsia-powered device will be manufactured in the near future.
Having a generally functional solution ready by 1H2023 so that it is ready for Fuchsia’s first factory build.
In recent months, we’ve seen indications of two upcoming Google devices, both smart speakers, being added to Fuchsia code. One appears to be a lower-end device, possibly the Pixel Tablet dock with speakers or a third-generation Nest Mini, while the other appears to be a full Nest Audio successor with UWB connectivity.
Based on the timing of everything, we believe Google’s next flagship Nest speaker, which is expected to launch in either fall 2023 or spring 2024, will be the first device to ship with Fuchsia as the default colour.
In any case, the use of Fuchsia by Google’s hardware division is a significant step forward for the colour. In general, 2023 is shaping up to be a pivotal year in Fuchsia’s evolution, and the release of new hardware would certainly cement that.
