“We were just taking it day by day,” Campbell said. “I guess the builder that the insurance company got just had trouble trying to find the help to come out and do it with the COVID stuff going on and as bad as it was.” The business has insurance to cover the damage, but construction lagged because of issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of the crash, the business was only offering take out under the state’s ban on indoor dining. Now, it will be open for indoor dining as well, Campbell said.
The crash left a sizable hole and scattered debris. On Thursday, Dec. 10, a white, four-door Chevrolet was headed west on Richfield Road when it hit the business, on the south side of the road, at the corner of Richfield Road and Huggins Avenue.
The driver is believed to have had a medical condition that caused them to swerve off the road, police shared with Campbell at the time. The driver of the vehicle wasn’t seriously hurt, he said. “It will be nice to see all the happy faces,” Tom Campbell, co-owner of Grandma’s Recipes, said of the customers. Tom owns the business with his wife Vicki.
Tom and his wife Vicki got married inside of the restaurant that they opened 25 years ago, putting all their savings and maxed out credit cards toward the business to make their dreams a reality. “At this time we’re trying to keep it as simple as possible because we’re still short staffed,” Vicki Campbell said. Most of the employees of the business have returned and others have recently given birth, including the Campbells’ daughter, who is a server at the restaurant.
