Intel says it wasn’t hacked after all; blames internal error for financial results leaking out

News Highlights: Intel says it wasn’t hacked after all; blames internal error for financial results leaking out.

Intel said on Friday that an internal flaw was responsible for a data breach that caused it to report quarterly earnings early. It said its corporate network had not been compromised, which reversed an earlier statement.

The company’s chief financial officer, George Davis, had previously told The Financial Times that Intel had published its earnings Thursday before the stock market shutdown because it believed a hacker had stolen financially sensitive information from the site.

The company’s quarterly results were originally scheduled to be released hours later after trading close on Wall Street Thursday.

“An infographic has been hacked from our PR editorial office site, ”Quoted Davis newspaper. It quoted an unnamed company spokesman as saying that Intel had been notified that the image was circulating outside the company.

Early access to such information can be beneficial to a securities dealer.

On Friday, Intel released a statement saying it had determined no hack had taken place.

It said, “Our earnings infographic URL was accidentally disclosed before our earnings were published and made accessible by third parties. Once we became aware of the situation, we immediately issued our profit announcement. Intel’s network has not been compromised and we have modified our process to avoid this in the future. “

The company’s stock price fell more than 9% on Friday as investors responded to signals from new CEO Pat Gelsinger that he is not planning any major changes in the company’s production strategy. Intel was considering sending advanced manufacturing to rivals, and some investors had pushed to split the company.

Intel is Oregon’s largest corporate employer, with 21,000 employees on Washington County campuses.
