How to Hold a Digital Seder This Passover

How to Hold a Digital Seder This Passover

Tonight, Wednesday, Jews around the world are beginning to celebrate the feast day of the Passover. It always starts with the Seder families gathering for a service and meal around the story of the exodus from Egypt. Unfortunately, given the closure, it is not possible for people this year to do this with someone outside their immediate home. However, there are several ways to get together and hold a digital Seder.

Zoom

Zooming is the most obvious way for a larger group of people to hold video conferences together. Installation is relatively easy. Unfortunately, there are stories of so-called “Zoombombing” – people have crashed into a Zoom room to divert the conversation and harass the participants. There are also examples of anti-Semitic abuse. To lead your digital Seder in peace, you must lock it when everyone is there. You must also use a unique meeting password. PCMag has other great tips for keeping your Zoom meetings safe, my colleague Andrew has also posted alternatives that are not included with Zoom’s privacy baggage.

House party

Houseparty can accommodate up to 10 people to participate in a video call. It’s much more fun and informal and requires less settings than Zoom, but you may not be able to involve the whole family! Again, if you’re using Houseparty, make sure to lock your conversation by tapping the lock icon at the bottom of your screen.

Facetime Group

A maximum of 32 people can participate in one FaceTime group call. Tap the + sign at the top to continue adding people. Make sure your camera is turned on by selecting the video option when making a call or by tapping the camera icon.

Best tips

  • Don’t talk – easier said than done in a noisy family environment! Try to anticipate differences between people before responding.
  • Mute microphone – If you don’t speak or read any part of the Seder service, mute that microphone. The mute button on the microphone is clearly visible in all the apps I mentioned above.
  • Check the angle of your camera – no one wants to look up!
