Kuo’s new investor note, per 9to5Mac, highlights that Apple is already working on the new MacBook Air. If mid-2022 is when Apple would launch it, we may as well be looking at a release in April next year, just like how the new iMac was launched earlier this year. We may even be looking at a WWDC 2022 release, which, honestly, is quite possible. Kuo’s note, however, does not give away a specific timeline.

Apple may already be working on the next-generation MacBook Air.
The MacBook Air currently uses LCD panels but Mini-LED will bring better power management.
This year, Apple is likely to introduce the Mini-LED tech to MacBooks with MacBook Pro.
Apple’s MacBook Pro M1X may be very likely to come later this year, but the cheaper and slimmer model, the MacBook Air may not arrive until the mid-2022. According to the renowned Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, the next MacBook Air’s launch is due for sometime towards the middle of 2022 and that it will feature a 13.3-inch Mini-LED display, something that Apple will eventually begin using on its entire MacBook range. The MacBook Air was last refreshed with the Apple M1 processor.

The next-generation MacBook Air is going to use a Mini-LED, Kuo said. This would be on a 13.3-inch display, which is the current size of the MacBook Air models. The Mini-LED technology is expected to make its way to the MacBook Pro sometime this year, and when that happens, it will open doors for MacBook Air to adopt that. Apple will likely not have another display size for the MacBook Air. However, its MacBook Pro may come with a 14-inch Mini-LED display, according to Kuo.

The 2022 MacBook Air will, obviously, come with an upgraded chipset that could be the M2. Last year, Apple launched both MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the M1 chipset, and this year, at least, the former is getting a slightly better version of the chipset. Previous rumours suggested the MacBook Air would be the first MacBook to use the M2 chipset. This means that Apple may be planning to bring the M1X processor to the MacBook Pro, while the MacBook Air is likely going for a big leap in terms of processor generation.

Kuo added that the MacBook Air will come with a new design, but what that would be is not clear at this point. A similar expectation is underway for this year’s MacBook Pro. According to rumours, the MacBook Pro, which is likely to launch sometime between September and November, will support an HDMI port and an SD card reader, among other things. Maybe all of that trickles down to the MacBook Air, which is known for its ultra-portability and slim profile.
