It’s Time To Find Out What’s Content Vaulted With Destiny 2: Lightfall

Lightfall is now less than 50 days away, and I’m sure there will be a full court press of information released about the upcoming expansion and subsequent season. But that’s the good news; at some point, Bungie will have to deliver the bad news.

Bungie has stated unequivocally that they will not vault any more expansions in the future. This comes after they vaulted all of Destiny 2‘s vanilla campaign content, two full DLCs, and the Forsaken expansion’s campaign. They stated that they want people to be able to fully experience the “Light and Darkness” saga, which they believe begins with the Shadowkeep campaign.

So that eliminates some possibilities. The Shadowkeep campaign cannot exist without the moon. The Beyond Light campaign cannot exist without Europa. The Witch Queen campaign cannot exist without the Throne World. When Forsaken was vaulted, the Dreaming City was purposefully saved from destruction. However, this leaves a number of unanswered questions, which I believe Bungie should address soon. Because they haven’t stated that nothing is being vaulted from here, seasonal content is still being phased out. However, are there any exceptions? What I’d like to know is:

What I hope for the future is that Bungie will reduce the content vault to only seasonal content in the future, while also saving things within that which can be saved, such as Battlegrounds to put in the playlist or particularly good exotic missions. I believe Bungie should make it a priority to put past exotic missions like Whisper, Zero Hour, and Presage back in the Legends tab in some way, as it’s insane to create content that good and have it just be…unplayable, forever, in order to save space. You literally cannot play the best missions in Destiny history right now, which is ridiculous.

Bungie appears to understand how much the community despises content vaulting, so they are attempting to strike a balance between the technical need to do so and keeping what they can while not cutting as deeply as they used to. I believe the community can agree on some compromises. As ridiculous as vaulting Leviathan, bringing it back as Derelict Leviathan, and vaulting it again is, I understand it’s not serving much of a purpose, and if you have to cut something, I understand. But I’m hoping that we can at least halt the culling of old major content and zones and start seeing things returned from the content vault. With Season of the Seraph, we’ve gotten a good chunk of Mars back. Rather than vaulting that section again, I’d like to see the entire thing, including the old strikes, return. That shouldn’t feel like a pipe dream, which it could be under the current system.

My guess is that content vaulting will be one of the last things we hear about before Lightfall, but I think it’s a good idea to start confirming who’s staying and who’s leaving now.
