IU Health System Provides a COVID-19 Update | News

Doctors said that the census is still high in both in the ICU and for hospitals. About 30 percent of their census is from COVID patients. However, when it comes to equipment and supplies, the hospital system is in good shape. “We see very few cases of the total that are fully vaccinated with boosters. It still continues to be very affective in protecting people from the most sick illnesses that we see, ” said Dr. Chris Weaver, the Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at IU Health.  “With respect to PPE we have been since probably three or fourth months after the pandemic started in the position to have between four and six months on hand. We’ve done that largely because we have a integrated service center or a warehouse where we were able to build those larger stocks,” said Joe Meyer, the Senior Vice President of System Operations at IU Health.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) — IU Health Hospital systems gave an update on its hospital census, staffing, and supplies. News 18 sat in on the update, where health leaders said while cases are starting to drop, but death rates are set to break records.

IU Health officials said there are currently 567 COVID positive patients hospitalized across it’s 16 facilities in the state. 70 percent of those people are unvaccinated. As for people in the ICU or on ventilators 90 percent are unvaccinated. IU Health leaders are saying that cases are starting to drop, but death rates are set to break records.

“We point that out because it’s not like these treatments are available for everyone who has COVID there is just no enough of that to go around,” warned Dr. Michele Saysana. According to health professionals on the call as of Thursday, there have been 274 deaths this month at IU hospitals across the state, which is an alarming number. Those forms of treatment aren’t available to everyone and will continue being used for people who are most likely to end up in the hospital or are immunocompromised.

“All of these therapies aside Remdesivir, but like monoclonal antibodies, Paxlovid and Evusheld are in very, very small quantities that we have access to and that hospitals have access to across the country,” said Dr. Michele Saysana, the Vice President of Safety, Quality, and Patient Improvement at IU Health. As for monoclonal antibodies and other newer treatments of COVID those remain slim.
