Flooding caused issues around the county and the region, with many roads being closed due to standing water or water damage. Other damage was still being assessed Saturday. According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, downtown Bloomington received 4.95 inches of rain on Friday. The weather service reminded drivers not to enter flooded roadways as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Motorists are encourage not to cross flooded roads and find an alternate route.
Ritz Hair Studio owner Trevor Werner says that there still was a foot of water in his hair salon as late as Saturday morning. While he is currently assessing damages, Werner is unsure when he can reopen due to equipment losses. Tracks general manager Jay Wilkin says that flooding in the early hours of Saturday morning damaged thousands of dollars of merchandise and equipment. While optimistic that Tracks will reopen in days rather than weeks, Wilkin cautions that repairs will take hundreds of hours.
Werner says that this is particularly difficult for his business, which recently reopened. The downtown damage is mainly confined to the East Kirkwood Avenue area, as businesses including Tracks and Ritz Hair Studio experienced major damages due to flooding.
The announcement said 23 culverts had been washed out and two bridges had suffered significant damage. In all, more than 30 Owen County roads are closed. Owen County officials are discouraging travel on county roads, except when essential. The emergency and travel advisory will be in effect for seven days unless extended. The declaration was issued by Owen County Board of Commissioners President Gary Burton, according to a news release from Jack White, director of Owen County Emergency Management.
