Globally, the situation is even more impressive. Mario Kart Wii has sold 37.38 million units in its lifetime. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, just the Switch version, is closing in on that number fast. It currently sits at 33.41 million units sold. The original release on Wii U adds another 8.45 million to that total. Those numbers are just going to keep growing, as Nintendo will be updating them at their next investor meeting on May 6.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe placed sixth in US sales this past month, per Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group. That one last surge was enough to push combined sales of the two versions to the top spot in US history, at least for racing games. It shouldn’t be terribly surprising to hear that the game it beat out for this honor is Mario Kart Wii. This series has been an unstoppable juggernaut for many years now, and there are no signs of slowing down.
