Netflix updated its iOS app on Monday, bringing a new interface to the iPhone version of its platform. The new interface includes new, more fluid animations, such as parallax effects that move elements as the user moves the phone.
The Netflix app for iPhone has been updated
When you open the Netflix app on your iPhone, you’ll now see a large card advertising a movie or series available on the platform. Using the iPhone’s accelerometer, this card moves with a parallax effect. But that’s only part of the redesign; it’s now even easier to filter content by category, switch between profiles, or use search regardless of where you are in the app.
When you tap on a movie or show, its art cover expands to reveal all of its details. The Coming Soon tab has also been redesigned and is now labelled “What’s New,” displaying recommended content for the user.
According to Janum Trivedi, a former Netflix UI designer who worked on the new Netflix app interface, the project began development in 2022. “I’ve been in charge of leading a UI refresh to make Netflix feel more fluid, delightful, and polished. “All of that work shipped today,” Trivedi said on Twitter. He also posted a short video demonstrating the new interface, which you can see below:
According to Trivedi, the following changes are included in the latest Netflix app update:
Interestingly, the former Netflix employee also stated that the company is “giving it some love” for its Apple TV app, implying that Netflix will have a new interface for tvOS in the future.
Netflix’s ad-based plan still doesn’t work on Apple TV
Netflix introduced a new ad-based plan last year in an attempt to attract more subscribers, as this tier is slightly less expensive than the others. However, the company later revealed that the new, lower-cost plan would not be available to Apple TV customers. Unfortunately, the situation has not changed.
The company never explained why the new ad-supported plan isn’t available in the Netflix tvOS app. However, given the current situation in which Netflix may discontinue the Basic plan without advertisements, Apple TV users may be forced to subscribe to the more expensive plans if they want to continue watching Netflix on the device.
It’s worth noting that Netflix’s Basic plan with ads is currently available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea.
