— Doug Bowser (@thetruebowser) April 7, 2021 It’s going to be great to get the video game industry back together with our fans this June. We’ll make the virtual format fun and engaging. Looking forward to seeing you all in June! https://t.co/ZQidcWqAF4 Nintendo’s commitment to E3 2021 is quite interesting given that the console manufacturer and publisher helped pave the way for digital showcases with its Nintendo Direct announcements, and the company was a notable no-show from multiple E3 conferences before even PlayStation withdrew from recent years’ festivities. It’s also noteworthy as Reggie Fils-Aimé, former head of Nintendo, said a virtual E3 wasn’t appealing. Although it seems likely that Nintendo may still deliver its E3 news in a Nintendo Direct format, it could also use the occasion as an opportunity to showcase limited time demos to a wide gaming audience.

Although details are scarce as to what exactly E3 2021’s virtual event will look like, a number of noteworthy publishers have been confirmed to participate. Following the ESA’s initial reports of Nintendo, Xbox, Ubisoft, WB Games Interactive, Capcom, and more being part of E3 2021 in some shape or form, Nintendo has doubled down on its presence at the virtual event, with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser expressing his enthusiasm to “get the game industry back together” in a Wednesday tweet. E3 2019 was canceled last year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s rapid spread, but several virtual summer events took its place. Geoff Keighley headlined potential E3 replacement Summer Games Fest, which will return in 2021 to directly compete with the much older industry event. That means there will be multiple major gaming events this summer, and more will likely be announced for E3-independent companies like PlayStation. Despite a longtime shift away from the once-essential annual conference, it doesn’t look like E3 has breathed its last breath quite yet.

Next: Potential E3 2021 Demos Worth Paying For E3 2021 is still looking down much skepticism from many people who feel the pandemic proved it’s an unnecessary vestige of a younger gaming industry. However, there’s plenty of major support from major publishers, so it seems clear that – at least for now – E3 isn’t going anywhere. Clearly the ESA has done something to make E3 2021 seem lucrative to the likes of Nintendo. Whether or not it will be a success compared to the other video game events remains to be seen. If it’s successful, it could pave the way for more online-minded shows from the ESA in the future.
